A múlt héten a szomszédos Sokoto államban közel száz embert gyilkoltak meg terroristák. A lakosság által banditáknak nevezett fegyveresek 2011 óta nyolcezer embert öltek meg az országrészben, ahonnan 200 ezren menekültek el az erőszak elől.
A banditák egyelőre nem mutatnak ideológiai elkötelezettséget, de a Nemzetközi Válságcsoport szerint Nigéria északnyugati része a különféle szélsőséges mozgalmak terepévé válhat. A szomszédos országokban működik a Boko Haram dzsihadista csoport.

A Boko Haram és a nigériai kormány közötti konfliktusban több mint 36 ezren vesztették életüket 2009 óta Nigéria északkeleti részén, és csaknem kétmillióan váltak földönfutóvá – az utóbbi hetekben is tízezrek menekültek el a harcok elől Nigerbe. Yusuf Gulumbo, a tábor vezetője szerint a tűzben, amely Ngala településén tört ki, megsemmisült mintegy 1250 ház is.
A tábor egyike azoknak a mentsváraknak, ahol olyan emberek élnek, akik a térségben tevékenykedő fegyveres csoportok, köztük a Boko Haram nigériai dzsihadista szervezet erőszakja elől menekültek el. A Boko Haram 2002-ben alakult Nigériában, majd kiterjesztette tevékenységét a szomszédos Nigerre, Csádra és Kamerunra is, ahol helyi lakosokat toborzott. A szervezet célja egy iszlám kalifátus létrehozása.
Az ENSZ adatai szerint megalakulása óta a szervezet tízezreket ölt meg, a terrortámadások miatt pedig további 2,5 millióan kényszerültek elhagyni otthonukat.

A rendőrség több embert ölt meg a koronavírus-járvány miatt elrendelt korlátozások állítólagos megszegése miatt Nigériában, mint maga a ragály – tudatta az AFP francia hírügynökség csütörtökön.
Az afrikai országban eddig 12-en haltak meg a járvány miatt, a rendőrség viszont március vége óta már 18 emberrel végzett. A nigériai emberi jogi bizottság jelentése szerint 105 esetben történt rendőri túlkapás a járvány idejére hozott szigorítások megszegőivel szemben, a legkirívóbb a 18 gyilkosság.
A szabályszegést indokként felhozó rendőrök ugyanakkor feltehetően több esetben hazudnak – írja a hírügynökség, amely szerint egy teherautó vezetőjével például szinte biztosan azért végeztek, mert nem volt hajlandó vesztegetési pénzt adni. A 190 millió lakosú Nigériában csütörtökig 407-en fertőződtek meg biztosan a koronavírustól.
