Aszlan Bzsania abház elnök szombaton bejelentette, hogy lemond és előrehozott választásokat tart, ha a tüntetők elhagyják a régió parlamentjének épületét. Az abház fővárosban, Szuhumiban összegyűlt tömeg azonban elutasította a megállapodást, az ellenzéki vezetők pedig azt mondták, hogy csak Bzsania feltétel nélküli lemondását fogadják el.
„Egyikünk sem azért jött ide, hogy helyet kapjunk (a parlamentben”) – mondta Valerij Bganba volt abház miniszterelnök a tömegnek a közösségi médiában élő videóban. „Azért jöttünk ide, hogy megmentsük népünket, országunkat.”
Legalább 14-en megsérültek pénteken, amikor ellenzéki tüntetők összecsaptak a rendőrökkel – jelentette a RIA Novosztyi orosz állami hírügynökség.
A törvényhozók összegyűltek a régió parlamentjének épületében, hogy megvitassák azokat az intézkedéseket, amelyek lehetővé teszik az orosz állampolgárok ingatlanvásárlást a szakadár államban. Az ellenzéki Népi Egység Fóruma nevű párt vezetője szerint az aktivisták az Oroszország és Abházia között nemrég aláírt beruházási tevékenységről szóló megállapodás ellen tiltakoztak, amely jogot ad az orosz cégeknek arra, hogy a szeparatista régióban építkezési projektekbe fektessenek be. Az abház fővárosban, Szuhumiban lévő épületben több mint 4000 XIX. és XX. századi alkotás kapott lángra szombat este.
„Ez helyrehozhatatlan kár számunkra” – mondta az Apsnypress abház hírügynökség szerint a Nemzeti Művészeti Galéria igazgatója, Szuram Szakanija.
A katasztrófavédelem szerint a tűz a tetőterületen ütött ki – az első megállapítások szerint ott egy elektromos kábel égett át.
„Az összes kép elégett” – mondta Szakanija.
A nyilvánosságra hozott fotókon az látszott, hogy a városközpontban lévő épület lángokban áll. A megsemmisült művek között abház és külföldi művészek festményei is voltak. Többek között a külföldön is ismert abház művész, Alekszandr Csacsba-Szarvasidze (1867–1969) mintegy háromszáz festménye is megsemmisült.
Abházia régiója a nemzetközi jog szerint Grúziához tartozik, de régóta bizonyos fokú autonómiával rendelkezik. Jelenleg egy önjelölt független kormány irányítja, amelyet hivatalosan csak Oroszország és néhány más ország ismer el.
A festői tájairól ismert, saját nyelvvel és kultúrával rendelkező régió a Szovjetunió összeomlása után szakadt el Grúziától.
Az Oroszország és Grúzia között a dél-oszétiai szakadár régió miatt 2008 augusztusában kitört háború óta Moszkva mindkét területen katonákat állomásoztat.
