Az abortusztörvény szigorítása elleni tüntetések csütörtökön kezdődtek Brazília legnagyobb városaiban, miután a kongresszus alsóháza megszavazta, hogy a törvényjavaslatot gyorsított eljárásban hagyják jóvá, ami korlátozná a törvényhozás több szintjén erről zajló vitát. A kongresszus felsőházában ugyanakkor valószínűtlen a tervezet elfogadása, a közösségi médiában megjelent dühös reakciók pedig tovább lassíthatják a törvényjavaslat elfogadtatásának folyamatát. Ezek hatására ugyanis Arthur Pereira de Lira házelnök – parlamenti források szerint – már nem tervezi, hogy a közeljövőben szavazásra bocsátja a javaslatot.
Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva elnök őrültségnek nevezte a törvénytervezetet, és kijelentette, hogy kormánya meg fogja védeni az abortuszra vonatkozó, jelenleg hatályos jogszabályokat, amelyek büntetik a nemi erőszaktevőket és tisztelettel bánnak az áldozatokkal.
Brazíliában jelenleg az abortusz csak nemi erőszak, magzati deformáció vagy az anya életének veszélyeztetése esetén engedélyezett. Amennyiben a jogszabálytervezet törvényerőre emelkedik, a 22. terhességi hét után a nemi erőszak áldozatainak abortusza is emberölésnek minősülne.
Feminista csoportok hevesen bírálták a törvényjavaslatot, amely szerintük a brazil nőket évtizedek óta nem látott mértékben fosztaná meg reproduktív jogaiktól, egyszersmind szigorúbb büntetést szabna ki a nemi erőszak áldozataira, mint magukra az elkövetőkre.
Érveik között szerepel továbbá, hogy a jogszabályi változások nagymértékben kihatnának a családtagok által bántalmazott gyermekek életére is, akik gyakran nincsenek tisztában azzal, hogy bűncselekmény áldozatai, és gyakran későn fedezik fel terhességüket is.
