Perrance Shiri a légierő parancsnoka és nyugalmazott marsall volt, mielőtt átvette az agrártárca vezetését. A hadsereg más parancsnokaival együtt segítette Mnangagwát 2017 novemberében Robert Mugabe megbuktatásában. Mugabe három évtizeden át vezette a délkelet-afrikai országot.
Egyesek a közösségi médiában ünnepelték Shiri halálát, felemlegetve, hogy ő vezette az Észak-Korea által kiképezett katonai egységet, amely civilek ezreit ölte meg az ország nyugati részén zajló lázadáskor 1982-87 között.
Zimbabwében 2879 koronavírus-fertőzöttet tartanak nyilván, és Shirival együtt 41-en haltak bele a vírus okozta Covid-19 betegség szövődményeibe.
