A földcsuszamlásokat a Julia hurrikánnal érkező heves esőzések miatt megáradt folyók okozták, elsősorban a Caracastól mintegy 60 kilométerre délnyugatra fekvő Las Tejerias környékén.
A venezuelai hatóságok hétfői tájékoztatása szerint legalább 34 halálos áldozata van az utóbbi évek legsúlyosabb természeti katasztrófájának, mintegy hatvanan pedig eltűntek.
Az 50 ezres lélekszámú Las Tejeriasban a sárral és törmelékkel borított utcákat munkagépekkel takarítják, miközben a mentőalakulatok drónokkal és kutyákkal kutatnak a túlélők után.

A két újságírót csütörtökön gyilkolták meg, a haiti biztonsági erők azonban közölték, pénteken megtalálták az áldozatok holttestét.
A CNN-nek a haiti biztonsági erők egyik forrása számolt be arról, hogy megtalálták annak a két újságírónak a holttestét, akiket csütörtökön gyilkoltak meg, s akikről azt híresztelték, hogy élve égették el őket.
Habár a Haiti Nemzeti Rendőrség által megosztott információk szerint az újságírókat – John Wesley Amady és Wilgens Louis Saint – élve elégették, a CNN által pénteken megszerzett fotók tanúsága szerint a holttesteken nem látszik semmiféle égési sérülés, az viszont egyértelműen megállapítható, hogy az egyikük halántékán egy lőtt seb található.
A CNN-nek az ügyhöz közel álló forrás elmondta, a haiti biztonsági erők nem mertek kimenni a gyilkosság helyszínére csütörtökön, ugyanis olyan kevesen vannak jelenleg állományban, hogy igen komoly veszélybe kerülhettek volna, ha ennyien mennek ki egy olyan gyilkossági helyszínre, ahol a környéken fegyveres bandák tartják rettegésben a lakosságot.
A helyzet pedig kifejezetten kellemetlenre sikeredett, ugyanis a haiti biztonsági erők anélkül adták ki közleményüket a gyilkosságról, hogy megbizonyosodtak volna annak körülményeiről, s miután kiderült, hogy első jelentéseikkel ellentétben mégsem égették el a holttesteket, az egyik áldozat munkaadója, a Radio Écoute FM csütörtökön szintén közleményt tett közzé, amelyben közölte, hogy alkalmazottját élve elégették.
Pénteken azonban kénytelenek voltak elnézést kérni és visszavonni korábbi közleményüket, mivel addigra már megtalálták a holttesteket, és nem volt rajtuk égési sérülés. Helyi jelentések szerint a régió biztonsági helyzete egyre siralmasabb, főként azért, mert rendszeresen történnek támadások, ráadásul még mindig nem tudni, hogy miért gyilkolták meg a két újságírót.
