Állatvédő aktivisták megrongálták kedden III. Károly király alig egy hónapja felavatott hivatalos portréját. A galéria, ahol a kép látható, rövid vizsgálat után közölte, hogy a festménynek nem esett baja.
A brit uralkodót formabontó módon ábrázoló hatalmas, 2,6 méter magas és 2 méter széles alkotás – az egyik legelismertebb kortárs brit portréművész, Jonathan Yeo munkája – a neves brit képzőművészeti magángyűjtemény, a Philip Mould Gallery londoni kiállítótermében látható.
Az Animal Rising (Állatfelkelés) nevű, magát erőszakmentes állatvédő szervezetként jellemző csoport két tagja Károly arcmására a Wallace és Gromit című brit animációs vígjátéksorozat emberi főszereplője, Wallace stilizált arcképét ragasztotta, alá pedig egy szövegbuborékot illesztett, amelyben Wallace felhívja hűséges kutyája, Gromit figyelmét arra, hogy milyen kegyetlenül bánnak a brit farmokon a tenyészállatokkal.
Az Animal Rising nyilatkozata szerint az aktivisták azért választották a tiltakozás e formáját, mert köztudott, hogy a király a Wallace és Gromit sorozat rajongója, és az is, hogy szívén viseli az állatvédelem ügyét.
A szervezet közölte: olyan farmokat vizsgált meg, amelyek az állatkínzás ellen küzdő, királyi védnökség alatt működő brit szervezet (RSPCA) jóváhagyó tanúsítványának birtokában vannak, de ezzel együtt is „elrettentő kegyetlenséggel” bánnak állatállományukkal. A csoport felszólította III. Károly királyt, hogy függessze fel az RSPCA támogatását, amíg ez a helyzet nem változik.
Kedd délután a galéria közölte, hogy a festmény nem rongálódott meg, mivel az aktivisták a képet védő üvegre ragasztották a stilizált filmkaraktert és a szöveget. Később a csoport is bejelentette, hogy csak vízzel ragasztotta a két papírt az üvegre, és az egész akciót csupán „derűs epizódnak” szánta.
A festmény, amely a brit hadsereg egyik alakulata, a Welsh Guards vörös díszegyenruhájában, ugyancsak a vörös különböző intenzív árnyalataiban játszó háttér előtt ábrázolja a királyt, négy évig készült, és Károly személyesen avatta fel május 14-én.
Az alkotás az első hivatalos királyi portré III. Károly tavaly májusi koronázása óta.Az el múlt időszakban több más, a keddinél jóval komolyabb támadás is történt nagy értékű képzőművészeti alkotások és történelmi emlékek ellen Londonban.
Májusban az angol-brit alkotmányosság ősi jogforrása, a Magna Carta egyik példányának tárolóját próbálta összetörni a Just Stop Oil nevű környezetvédő csoport két idős aktivistája vésővel és kalapáccsal a londoni brit nemzeti könyvtárban.
A felbecsülhetetlen értékű történelmi dokumentum nem sérült meg.
A csoport két másik tagja 2022 októberében a londoni Nemzeti Galériában konzerv paradicsomlevest öntött Vincent van Gogh egyik leghíresebb, Napraforgók című festményére.
A képkeretet kisebb károsodás érte, az alkotás azonban – amelyet üveglap védett – sértetlen maradt. Tavaly novemberben a Just Stop Oil két tagja szintén a londoni Nemzeti Galériában Diego Velázquez Vénusz tükörrel című alkotásának védőüvegét törte be több helyen.

Sárga, piros és narancssárga festéket öntöttek Rómában az oroszlános kút szobraira tüntetők, akik az állatok cirkuszokban való felléptetése ellen tiltakoztak.
A demonstráció résztvevői az Elég volt az állatokból a cirkuszokban! – feliratú transzparens húzták ki az olasz főváros egyik legnagyobb terén, a Piazza del Popolón. A tér közepén álló szökőkutat (Fontana dell’Obelisco) négy oroszlán díszíti, közepén egy ókori egyiptomi obeliszk magasodik. A színes festék a szökőkút egy részét borította be.
A helyszínen állandó állomáshellyel bíró csendőrök egy 33 éves férfit és egy 29 éves nőt vettek őrizetbe. Műemlékrongálás miatt feljelentést tettek ellenük.
Az akciót az Állati Forradalom nevű mozgalom vállalta magára.
Az olasz parlament januárban szigorította a műemlékek és műkincsek rongálásáért kiszabható büntetéseket. A kettőtől öt évig terjedő börtönbüntetés mellett hatvanezer euróig emelték a fejenként kiszabható bírságot, amely több mint 22 millió forintnak felel meg.

Állatvédők tiltakoztak pénteken a spanyolországi bikaviadalok ellen a Vatikánnál; a bikának öltözött állatvédők Ferenc pápát arra szólították fel, hogy nyilvánosan ítélje el az állatkínzást.
A spanyolországi Pamplonában évente megtartott, hétnapos esemény során a futtatást követő bikaviadalon az állatokat általában több szúrást követően a matador egy karddöféssel végzi ki. Az állatvédő szervezetek azért fordultak Ferenc pápához az ügyben, mert a bikafuttatást a város védőszentje, San Fermín tiszteletére rendezik meg.
Mivel az ilyen eseményeket gyakran katolikus szentek tiszteletére vagy keresztény ünnepek keretében tartják meg, a katolikus egyháznak kötelessége tenni az efféle bántalmazás ellen azzal, hogy a vallás nevében nyilvánosan elítéli a bikák kínzását – fogalmaztak nyilatkozatukban a PETA nemzetközi állatvédő szervezet olasz képviselői.
„Arra kérjük az pápát, hogy mint a római katolikus egyház feje, nyilvánosan ítélje el és utasítsa el azt a kínzást, amelynek a bikák a corrida során ki vannak téve” – nyilatkozta a Reuters hírügynökségnek Patrizia Re, a PETA szóvivője.
Nem példátlan, hogy az egyházfő szót emel a bikafuttatás ellen: V. Piusz pápa 1567-ben ediktumban ítélte el a bikaviadalokat, amiért azok szerinte idegenek a keresztény kegyességtől és jótékonyságtól, mi több a bikafuttatás „inkább démonoknak, mintsem embereknek való” gyakorlat, ám a kiátkozással fenyegető pápai rendelet hamar feledésbe merült.
