A Jemen bizonyos részeit évek óta uraló húszik hónapok óta támadják a kereskedelmi hajókat, komoly fennakadásokat okozva a világkereskedelemben. Az Egyesült Államok, Nagy-Britannia és más nyugati országok válaszul hadműveleteket indítottak a kalózok ellen Jemen partjainál.
Legkevesebb 16 civil halálos áldozata van a legújabb, péntek hajnali amerikai és brit légicsapásoknak a jemeni tengerparti Hodeida tartományban – jelentette az Iránnal szövetséges húszi milícia által működtetett televízióállomás.
Legalább 34-en megsebesültek az éjszakai légicsapásokban – tette hozzá az al-Maszirah tévécsatorna a milícia által ellenőrzött tartomány egyik helyi tisztségviselőjére hivatkozva. A műsorszolgáltató szerint a csapások a tartományi rádió épületét és a hodeidai asz-Szalif kikötőt vették célba.
Az amerikai erők azt közölték, hogy harci gépeik nyolc húszi drónt semmisítettek meg a lázadók ellenőrizte jemeni területeken, illetve a Vörös-tenger felett. Az amerikai haderő e térségért felelős Középső Parancsnoksága az X közösségi oldalon egy bejegyzésben arról számolt be, hogy az amerikai és a brit erők 13 húszi célpontra mértek csapást, mondván, hogy azok fenyegetést jelentettek az amerikai és koalíciós erőkre, valamint a térségben haladó kereskedelmi hajókra.
A Jemen egyes részeit 2014 óta uraló húszik hónapok óta támadják a Vörös- és az Arab-tengeren, valamint az Indiai-óceánon az izraeli kikötőkbe tartó vagy izraeli cégek tulajdonában lévő hajókat, indoklásuk szerint így torolják meg a Gázai övezet elleni izraeli támadásokat.
Ezekre válaszul az Egyesült Államok, Nagy-Britannia és más nyugati országok hadműveleteket indítottak a szóban forgó hajók védelmére. A nagy hajózási társaságok elkerülik ezt az útvonalat, és helyette a jóval hosszabb utat teszik meg a dél-afrikai Jóreménység-fok körül.
