Egy wisconsini férfi, Ryan Borgwardt, saját vízbefulladását rendezte meg, hogy elhagyja családját, majd Kelet-Európába szökött. A hatóságok több mint ötven napig kutattak utána, míg végül gyanítani kezdték, hogy az eset szándékos megtévesztés. Most kiderült, hogy a férfi jelenleg Kelet-Európában tartózkodik és felvette a kapcsolatot az amerikai hatóságokkal.
Augusztus 11-én este Borgwardt üzenetet küldött feleségének, hogy épp a kajakos túráról tart vissza a partra. Másnap megtalálták felborult kajakját, mentőmellényét, valamint autóját és személyes tárgyait a parton.
A hatóságok több mint ötven napig kutattak utána, köztük búvárokkal és keresőkutyákkal, míg végül gyanítani kezdték, hogy az eset szándékos megtévesztés.
A nyomozás során kiderült, hogy Borgwardt májusban új útlevelet igényelt, amit a szökéshez használt, miután állítólag az előzőt elvesztette.
A laptopján külföldi banki átutalásokat és egy üzbegisztáni nővel folytatott beszélgetéseket találtak.
A seriff nem kívánt nyilatkozni, amikor megkérdezték, mit tud a nőről, de azt mondta, hogy a rendőrség „egy oroszul beszélő nőn keresztül” vette fel a kapcsolatot Borgwardttal.
A hatóságok szerint a férfi egy bonyolult szökési tervet hajtott végre, amely során Detroitból Kanadába, majd onnan Európába utazott.

A seriff hivatala szerint a laptop merevlemezét kicserélték, a böngészőket pedig törölték Borgwardt eltűnésének napján.
Borgwardt novemberben kapcsolatba lépett a rendőrséggel, és közölte, hogy „biztonságban van” és személyes okok miatt hagyta el az országot.
A seriff szerint visszatérése saját döntésén múlik, de a hatóságok és családja remélik, hogy karácsonyra hazatér. A szökés és a hamis haláleset okozta kutatások több tízezer dollárba kerültek, és a hatóságok fontolóra vették, hogy vád alá helyezik az ügy akadályozása miatt.
A nyomozók elmondták, hogy rengeteg erőforrást fektettek a férfi keresésébe, amely végül szándékos félrevezetésnek bizonyult. Jelenleg a hatóságok igyekeznek elősegíteni Borgwardt hazatérését, bár pontos holléte továbbra sem ismert – számolt be róla a Guardian.
