Robbanás történt az amerikai Kadena légibázis közelében, Okinawa prefektúra déli részén, a japán szárazföldi önvédelmi erők négy katonája könnyebb sérüléseket szenvedett – közölte a Kyodo News helyi tisztviselőkre és a Védelmi Minisztérium képviselőire hivatkozva.
A Védelmi Minisztérium képviselői információja szerint a japán önvédelmi erők bombamentesítési műveleteire való kiképzése során engedély nélküli robbanás történt, amelynek következtében a közelben tartózkodók ujjsérüléseket és valószínűleg halláskárosodást szenvedtek.
Egy védelmi minisztérium forrása arról számolt be, hogy a robbanás az Önvédelmi Erők lőszerraktárának területén történt, valószínűleg egy olyan raktárban, ahol fel nem robbant lőszereket tárolják.
A helyi hatóságok adatai szerint nem adtak ki evakuálási parancsot a környékbeli lakosok számára, és nincs veszélye további robbanásoknak vagy tűzeseteknek.
Okinawa, miután 1972-ben visszakerült az amerikai ellenőrzés alól Japán második világháborús vereségét követően, továbbra is otthont ad az Egyesült Államok japán katonai létesítményei többségének.
