Több ember is súlyos fagyási sérüléseket szenvedett Kansas Cityben, a Chiefs és a Miami Dolphins mérkőzése alatt az amerikaifutball-bajnokság rájátszásában.
Egy Missouri állambeli kórházban állítólag egy tucat emberen végeztek amputációt, mind súlyos fagyási sérüléseket szenvedtek a január 13-i Dolphins és Kansas City Chiefs összecsapásán.
A rekordközeli hideg miatt a mentők 69 embert láttak el a meccs alatt, melyet sokáig meg sem akartak rendezni, miután aznap megdőlt a hidegrekord a városban. A mínusz 20 fokos hideg ellenére óriási volt a tömeg a lelátón, holott a széllökéseknek köszönhetően a hőérzet elérhette a mínusz 33 fokot is.
A sérültek pontos számát nem hozták nyilvánosságra, azonban a kórház közleménye szerint 12 páciensnél ujj- és lábujj-amputációt kellett végrehajtani, ráadásul további műtétekre lehet számítani.
A meccs azután került megrendezésre, hogy riasztást adott ki az amerikai meteorológiai szolgálat a hideg idő és az erős széllökések miatt. Feljegyzések alapján a Chiefs–Dolphins meccs volt az NFL történetének negyedik leghidegebb mérkőzése.
