A heves esőzések okozta súlyos áradások miatt több száz ember kényszerült elhagyni az otthonát az északkelet-ausztráliai Queensland államban. Az ausztrál hatóságok több mint 300 embert mentettek ki, s megállás nélkül dolgoztak, miközben többen is a háztetőkre kapaszkodva várták a kimenekítést.
Félő volt, hogy a közel 160 ezer lelkes Cairns városában elfogy az ivóvíz. Queensland állam rendőrfőnöke, Katarina Carroll „teljesen pusztítónak” nevezte az áradást, hozzátéve, hogy sem súlyos sérülés, sem pedig haláleset nem történt az ítéletidő következtében. Mint kiderült, a környéken az elmúlt héten átlagosan több mint 2 méternyi eső esett.
A felhőszakadás, amelyet részben a Jasper nevű korábbi trópusi ciklon váltott ki, több mint 500 milliméter csapadékot hozott a Daintree, Mossman és Barron vízgyűjtő területére egyetlen nap leforgása alatt. Cairns repülőterét ideiglenesen lezárták, emellett járatokat töröltek vagy halasztottak el. Az észak-queenslandi Wujal Wujal őslakos település pedig teljesen elszigetelődött a külvilágtól.
Az esőzések utakat és vasútvonalakat vágtak el, egész közösségeket zártak el, s december 18-ára 14 ezer otthon és vállalkozás maradt áram nélkül. Az AP jelentése szerint az ausztrál hatóságok több mint 300 embert mentettek ki az árvízből Ausztrália északkeleti részén. A helyi hatóságok hétfői beszámolói szerint megállás nélkül azon dolgoztak, hogy mindenkit kimenekítsenek az elárasztott területekről, sok lakos pedig a háztetőkre volt kénytelen kapaszkodni.
A hirtelen jött és masszív áradás miatt hétfőn lezárták Cairns repülőterét, a hatóságok pedig attól tartanak, hogy a 160 ezres lakosú város elveszíti hozzáférését az ivóvízhez. Noha hétfőre Cairnsben enyhült az esőzés mértéke, a közeli Port Douglasban, Daintree-ben, Cooktownban, Wujal Wujalban és Hope Vale-ben az egyik legmagasabb szintű időjárási figyelmeztetést adták ki, hangsúlyozva, hogy további heves esőzésekre lehet számítani.
Queensland állam rendőrfőnöke, Katarina Carroll „teljesen pusztítónak” nevezte az áradást, kiemelve, hogy nagy kihívást jelentett számukra, hogy kimenekítsék a több mint 300 bajba jutott lakost, ám végül sikerrel jártak. Carroll azt is megosztotta, sem súlyos sérülés, sem pedig haláleset nem történt az ítéletidő következtében.
A tisztviselők közlése szerint mind a 300 kimenekített lakost helikopterrel evakuálják Wujal Wujal közösségből, ahol kilenc felnőtt és egy 7 éves gyermek órákat töltött az éjszaka folyamán egy kórház tetején.
A 2-es kategóriájú trópusi ciklon szerdán haladt el Wujal Wujal közelében, s bár a heves szél nem okozott jelentősebb károkat, a csapadék annál inkább: utak és vasútvonalak váltak járhatatlanná, számos közösség elszigetelődött a külvilágtól, s legkevesebb 14 ezer háztartás és vállalkozás volt áram nélkül hétfőn.
