Otthonok tízezrei maradtak áram nélkül kedden Bosznia-Hercegovinában az erős havazás miatt, a hóviharokat kísérő erős széllökések miatt Szerbiában és Horvátországban is közlekedési káosz alakult ki.
A hatóságok szerte a Balkánon figyelmeztetést adta ki, miután a hó több fontosabb útvonalat eltorlaszolt, betiltották a nehézjárművek közlekedését, sebességkorlátozást vezettek be az érintett útvonalakon és felszólították a lakosokat, hogy ha tehetik, ne induljanak útnak. A közlekedést nehezítik az útra kidőlt fák, és a nyári gumikkal, hólánc nélkül közlekedők. Egyes hótorlaszok vastagsága elérte a két métert.
A két boszniai áramszolgáltató szerint összesen több mint 170 ezer háztartásban szünetel az áramszolgáltatás, főként az ország északi és nyugati részein. Közlésük szerint a helyzet „rendkívül nehéz”, sűrű, nedves hó rárakódott az áramvezetékekre, amelyekhez nehéz hozzáférni.
Bosznia több részén teljesen leállt a vasúti közlekedés, bezártak az iskolák és az óvodák a járhatatlan utak és az áramszünet miatt. Az északnyugat-boszniai Drvart kedden teljesen elzárta a zord időjárás a világtól. Hétfő éjjel gépkocsik tucatjai rekedtek a hóban, az utazókat kedd hajnalban sikerült kimenteni.

Tűzoltók százai küzdenek Horvátországban, Észak-Macedóniában, Görögországban, Albániában és Bulgáriában a pusztító erdőtüzekkel.
Horvátországban csütörtökön reggelre már sikerült ellenőrzés alá vonni a helyzetet. A helyi tűzoltóság szerda esti tájékoztatása szerint a legkritikusabb helyzet Dalmáciában alakult ki Podgora és Tucepi települések térségében, a Makarska riviérán, Split és Dubrovnik között.
A Slobodna Dalmacija horvát lap szerint a lángokat alig 20 méterre sikerült megfékezni az első lakóépületektől Podgorában. Több mint 300 tűzoltó, hetven tűzoltósági jármű és repülőgép segítségével elejét tudta venni annak, hogy leégjenek a házak. Több tucat helyi lakost és turistát kellett biztonságba helyezni.
A horvát hatóságok szerint a tűz egy helyi méhész gondatlanságából lángolhatott fel a Biokovo nemzeti park területén, amely épp Podgora és Tucepi között található. Mintegy 400 hektár zöldterület vált a lángok martalékává.
Egy másik erdőtűz Split városától 30 kilométerre nyugatra tombol Vrsine környékén. Itt mintegy 500 hektáron lángol az erdőség és a bozótos egy nehezen megközelíthető hegyvidéki régióban.
Észak-Macedónia csütörtökön kért segítséget az Európai Uniótól szintén erdőtüzek miatt. Sztojancse Angelov, a helyi katasztrófavédelmi hatóság vezetője egyben jelezte, hogy a helyzet súlyosbodása esetén a NATO-tól is segítséget kérhetnek.
A fővárostól, Skopjétól mintegy 60 kilométerre keletre pusztító erdőtüzek a héten komoly károkat okoztak házakban, egyes épületeket lakhatatlanná téve. Mindez helyi lakosok evakuálását is szükségessé tette, illetve egy idős lakos életét vesztette.
Szlovénia és Csehország is bejelentette: tűzoltó-helikoptereket küld Észak-Macedóniába.
Görögországban az észak-macedón határon található Diran-tó és Évia szigetén lángolt az erdőség. A tűzoltóság mindkét helyen nagy erőket vetett be a tűz megfékezésére, azonban erős széllökések nehezítették erőfeszítéseiket.
Bulgáriában szintén két nagyobb erdőtűz tombol, az egyik a görög határtérségben, a másik a Malesevszka-hegy térségében, az észak-macedón határon. A tűzoltóság szerint több tízezer hektár erdőség és mezőgazdasági terület érintett.
Albániában szintén tűzoltók százai fáradoznak egy nagyobb erdőtűz megfékezésén Shengjin térségében. A hadsereg alakulatai és önkéntesek is segítik a tűzoltást.

Legalább hatan meghaltak, jelentékeny károk keletkeztek, és sok embert kellett evakuálni az utóbbi két napban a Balkánon végigsöprő, árvizeket okozó özönvízszerű esőzésekben – közölték hétfőn a helyi hatóságok.
Az egyik legsúlyosabban érintett terület Albánia északnyugati része, ahol Shkodra és Lezha régiókban több ezer hold mezőgazdasági területet és lakások százait árasztotta el a Drini, Albánia leghosszabb folyója.
A hadsereg több száz katonája segített kimenekíteni a családokat a több mint 600 elárasztott lakóházból.
Bardh Spahia polgármester szerint Shkodra városát az áradások elvágták az ország többi részétől.
A shkodrai XVIII. századi híres Ólom-mecset is víz alá került, miután az épületben már korábbi áradások alkalmával is károk keletkeztek.
Hétfőn reggel rendőrségi búvárok megtalálták egy eltűnt apa és fia holttestét, akik autóját vasárnap sodorta el az ár a fővárostól, Tiranától mintegy 150 kilométerre északra található Boge településen.
A megáradt folyók Montenegróban és Szerbiában négy emberéletet követeltek a hétvégén. Egy nő két gyermekével vízbe fulladt, miután autójuk egy hídról egy folyóba zuhant. Szerbiában egy folyóba esett és megfulladt egy kétéves gyermek.
A Szerbia déli részén található Raska régióban szükségállapotot hirdettek az áradások miatt, és mozgósították a hadsereget is, hogy segédkezzen a helyi kimenekítésben, valamint az ivóvíz- és élelmiszerosztásban.
Az áradások Koszovó nyugati részén épületkárokat okoztak, s oktatási szünetet kellett elrendelni, áldozatokról azonban nem érkeztek jelentések.

Balkán számos folyóját eltorlaszolják a hatalmas szemétszigetek, környezetvédelmi vészhelyzetet teremtve és veszélyeztetve a térség vízerőműveinek működését.
Műanyag zacskók és palackok, rozsdás hordók és más hulladékok úsznak a Drina folyóban a boszniai Szerb Köztársasághoz tartozó Visegrád városa mellett. A Drina montenegrói, szerbiai és boszniai mellékfolyói még több hulladékot szállítanak, miután a felduzzadt vizek elérték a környék hulladéklerakóit is.
A balkáni országokban nem megfelelő a hulladékkezelés, rendszeresen több tonnányi szemét kerül a folyókba. Az elmúlt héten egy átszakadt gát hatalmas szeméttorlódást okozott a Drinán, ami veszélyeztette a visegrádi duzzasztógátat is.
A hatóságok szerint évente 6-8 ezer köbméter hulladékot távolítanak el a folyóból Visegrád közelében. Bár a probléma nem új, Szerbia, Bosznia-Hercegovina és Montenegró azonban eddig keveset tettek ennek megoldására annak ellenére is, hogy az Európai Unióhoz való csatlakozásra törekednek.
Dejan Furtula, az Eco Center környezetvédelmi csoport aktivistája szerint a Drinában lévő szemét a helyi közösséget is veszélyezteti. Amikor a hulladékot eltávolítják a vízből, egy helyi szemétlerakóba kerül, amely gyakran lángra kap, a belőle származó mérgező folyadék pedig visszakerül a folyóba.
„Mindannyian veszélyben vagyunk itt, a teljes ökoszisztéma” – mondta Furtula.
Az 1990-es években zajlott háború után a Balkán térsége mind gazdasági, mind környezetvédelmi szempontból le van maradva Európa többi részétől. Szintén hatalmas probléma a veszélyes mértékű légszennyezettség is a legtöbb városban.
A visegrádi gátnál kedden kezdték meg a munkálatokat a szeméttorlódás eltávolítása és a vízerőmű károsodásának megakadályozása érdekében.
