Sajtóértesülések szerint egyelőre nem részletezett biztonsági incidens következtében megkezdték a Gatwick repülőtér déli termináljának evakuálását, miközben az Egyesült Királyság második legforgalmasabb repülőtere részleges lezárás alatt áll. A helyszínen szünetel a vonat- és buszforgalom, az utasokat pedig arra kérik, hogy halasszák el utazásukat.
A repülőtér vezetése közleményben jelezte, hogy az incidens hátterének vizsgálata folyamatban van. A biztonsági intézkedések részeként a Gatwick Express vonatai sem közlekednek a reptér felé, az északi terminál ugyanakkor változatlanul működik.
A BBC szerint a Gatwick repülőtér kiemelte, az utasok és a személyzet biztonsága a legfontosabb, hangsúlyozva, hogy minden lehetséges lépést megtesznek a probléma mielőbbi megoldása érdekében.
A közösségi médiában terjedő videókon és fotókon az evakuálás alatt álló utasok tömegei láthatók, ahogy távolodnak a déli termináltól. Szemtanúk szerint még azokat az utasokat is kikísérték a reptér területéről, akik már átestek a biztonsági ellenőrzésen. A közlekedési leállások miatt emberek ezrei torlódtak fel az utcákon és parkolókban.
Az utasokat, akik a kapuk közelében tartózkodnak, arra kérték, hogy ne térjenek vissza a váróterembe, s maradjanak a jelenlegi helyükön. A repülőtér vezetősége arra szólította fel az utazókat, hogy lehetőség szerint halasszák el útjukat legalább a reggeli órákig, amíg a hatóságok kivizsgálják az eseményeket. A terminál és a pályaudvar kiürítése jelenleg is zajlik.
