A 69 esztendős, nős, ötgyermekes Amess, aki csaknem négy évtizedig volt a brit Konzervatív Párt alsóházi frakciójának tagja, péntek délután éppen képviselői fogadóórát tartott délkelet-angliai választókörzetében, az Essex megyei Leigh-on-Sea kisvárosban, amikor egy férfi, aki az utcáról tért be, késsel többször megszúrta.
Sir David a gyors orvosi beavatkozás ellenére a helyszínen meghalt. A 25 éves gyanúsítottat elfogták. A vizsgálatot a Scotland Yard terrorellenes parancsnoksága irányítja.
A Scotland Yard – hivatalos nevén Metropolitan Police – a londoni rendőrség, de terrorelhárító parancsnokságának hatásköre az egész országra kiterjed.
Dean Haydon, a Scotland Yard főparancsnok-helyettese, a rendőrség terrorelhárítási tevékenységének országos vezető koordinátora a szombat hajnali tájékoztatás szerint terrorcselekménynek nyilvánította a támadást.
A beszámoló szerint az eddig elvégzett vizsgálat arra vall, hogy a gyilkosság potenciálisan az iszlamista szélsőségességhez köthető. Az őrizetbe vett 25 éves férfiről a rendőrség csak annyit közölt, hogy brit, és jelenleg egy essexi rendőrőrsön tartják vizsgálati fogságban.
A tájékoztatás szerint eddig két londoni lakcímen kezdődött házkutatás.
A Scotland Yard közölte azt is, hogy a jelenlegi álláspont szerint a gyanúsított egyedül cselekedett, és a nyomozók nem keresnek mást a bűncselekménye ügyében, bár a támadás körülményeinek feltárását célzó vizsgálat még tart.
Sir David Amess 1983 óta volt tagja folyamatosan a jelenleg kormányzó Konzervatív Párt alsóházi frakciójának, és erőteljes állatvédő kampányairól, valamint ugyancsak markáns EU-szkeptikus nézeteiről is közismert volt. Öt éven belül másodszor történt olyan halálos végű támadás Nagy-Britanniában, amelyet parlamenti képviselő ellen követtek el.
Jo Coxot, a Munkáspárt kétgyermekes, 41 éves képviselőnőjét 2016. június 16-án, egy héttel a brit EU-tagságról tartott népszavazás előtt három lövéssel és többtucatnyi késszúrással gyilkolta meg az észak-angliai Leeds egyik elővárosában egy magányos tettes, Thomas Mair, akit még abban az évben tényleges életfogytiglani börtönre ítéltek.

A 69 éves, ötgyerekes Sir David Amess éppen képviselői fogadóórát tartott a délkelet-angliai Leigh-on-Sea kisvárosban lévő választókörzeti irodájában, amikor egy férfi, aki az utcáról tért be, késsel többször megszúrta.
Az Essex megyei rendőrség péntek délutáni tájékoztatása szerint a 25 éves feltételezett elkövetőt röviddel a támadás után, gyilkosság gyanújával őrizetbe vették. A helyszínen megtalálták a támadáshoz használt kést is.
A rendőrség közölte, hogy más gyanúsítottat nem keres az ügyben.
Sir David egyik utolsó, keddi keltezésű Twitter-bejegyzésében éppen azt tudatta választóival, hogy péntek délután, Leigh-on-Sea metodista egyházközösségének központjában tart választókerületi fogadóórát.
A képviselőt itt, a meghirdetett fogadóórán érte a késes támadás. Mentőhelikoptert is küldtek a helyszínre, de nem tudták megmenteni az életét.
Sir David Amess csaknem négy évtizedig volt a londoni alsóház konzervatív frakciójának tagja.
Először 1983-ban választották képviselővé, és 1997-ben, a jelenlegi legnagyobb brit ellenzéki parlamenti erő, a Munkáspárt Tony Blair vezetésével aratott akkori földcsuszamlásszerű győzelme, valamint a további két nagyarányú munkáspárti győzelem után is megőrizte mandátumát.
Sir David erőteljes állatvédő kampányairól, valamint ugyancsak markáns EU-szkeptikus nézeteiről is közismert volt.
A brit EU-tagságról 2016-ban tartott népszavazáson, amelyen a kilépést pártolók kerültek szűk, 51,89 százalékos többségbe, David Amess – Boris Johnson jelenlegi miniszterelnökhöz hasonlóan – a kilépésért kampányolt, és utána is az egyik legnagyobb Brexit-kampánycsoport, a Leave Means Leave (A kilépés kilépést jelent) aktív tagja volt. A csoport a referendum utáni időszakban a népszavazás eredményének mielőbbi érvényesítéséért küzdött.
Sir David Amess az 1980-as évek végétől hosszú ideig kampányolt azért is, hogy Raoul Wallenberg néhai svéd diplomatának – aki a magyarországi holokauszt idején több tízezer üldözött zsidó életét mentette meg – szobrot emeljenek Londonban.
E célja megvalósult; a szobrot, amely London egy belvárosi zsinagógája előtt áll, 1997-ben II. Erzsébet királynő avatta fel.
Öt éven belül másodszor történt olyan halálos végű támadás Nagy-Britanniában, amelyet parlamenti képviselő ellen követtek el.
Jo Coxot, a legnagyobb brit ellenzéki parlamenti erő, a Munkáspárt kétgyermekes, 41 éves képviselőnőjét 2016. június 16-án, egy héttel a brit EU-tagságról tartott – a kilépésre voksolók szűk többségű győzelmével végződött – népszavazás előtt három lövéssel és többtucatnyi késszúrással gyilkolta meg egy magányos tettes, Thomas Mair, akit még abban az évben tényleges életfogytiglani börtönre ítéltek.
