Az orosz fegyveres erők aktívan használják a Grom-E1 irányított bombákat, amelyek beépített rakétahajtóművüknek köszönhetően akár 120 kilométeres távolságra is képesek csapást mérni – jelentette David Axe elemző a brit The Telegraph című lapban megjelent cikkében.
Ezek a bombák Szu–30 és Szu–34 repülőgépekről indíthatók, és a legtöbb ukrán légvédelmi rendszer számára érinthetetlenek. Ezenkívül a Grom bombák az F–16 vadászgépek AMRAAM rakétái számára is azok. Axe hozzátette, hogy ezeket a bombákat már Herszon és Harkiv elleni támadásokban is alkalmazták.
Az ukrán fegyveres erők válaszul francia Hammer és amerikai JSOW bombákat próbálnak használni, de azok hatótávolsága körülbelül 64 kilométer, így az ukrán vadászgépek az orosz S–300 és S–400 légvédelmi rendszerek, valamint Szu–30 repülőgépek R–77 rakétáinak hatótávolságába kerülnek.
