A riksa – egy úgynevezett „pedicab” – sűrű füstfelhőt eregetve égett, miközben a rendőrség kordont vont a Buckingham-palotától alig néhány méterre lévő terület köré – számoltak be a The Standard.
A szemtanúk arról számoltak be, hogy a lángok két méter magasra csaptak fel, és előtte egy robbanáshoz hasonlító hangot is hallottak. Először többen azt hitték, hogy terrortámadás történhetett.
A helyszínre riasztott tűzoltók gyorsan eloltották a tüzet. Az utat ezután a rendőrség lezárta. A rendőrök beszámolója szerint nem élnek a gyanúval, hogy valaki szándékosan gyújtotta volna fel a járművet. Sérültekről nem érkezett jelentés.

A Buckingham-palota kapujának hajtott egy autó, vezetőjét rongálás gyanújával őrizetbe vették.
A Scotland Yard rövid vasárnapi tájékoztatása szerint az incidens még szombat hajnalban történt. A gépkocsi vezetőjét fegyveres rendőrök vették őrizetbe, majd kórházba szállították. A hatósági beszámoló szerint ugyanakkor sérülés nem történt.
A londoni rendőrség vizsgálatot indított az eset körülményeinek feltárására. A közösségi médiafelületeken megjelent fotókon egy kék, ötajtós jármű látszik a Buckingham-palota – a brit királyi család első számú londoni rezidenciája – díszes kovácsoltvas főbejáratánál, bekapcsolt vészvillogókkal.
Vasárnap a kaput palánkok fedték. Tavaly májusban a londoni miniszterelnöki hivatal és a pénzügyminiszteri rezidencia utcája, a Downing Street kerítésének ütközött egy autó.
A gépkocsi vezetőjét szándékos rongálás és közúti veszélyeztetés gyanújával vették őrizetbe. A rendőrség nem sokkal később bejelentette, hogy nem kezeli terrorizmussal összefüggő cselekményként az incidenst.
