Egy tűzoltót és az erdészeti hatóságok egy tisztségviselőjét gyanúsítják azzal Chilében, hogy szándékosan idézhették elő a februárban az ország középső részén pusztító erdőtüzeket, amelyekben 137 ember életét vesztette.
A két férfit helyi idő szerint pénteken őrizetbe vették – jelentette be a chilei rendőrség.
Az erdőtüzek két kisebb, egyidejűleg keletkezett tűzből alakultak ki február 2-án Vina del Mar és Valparaiso város közelében. A lángok gyorsan terjedtek a hőség és az erős szél miatt. A hatóságok kezdetektől fogva gyanították, hogy szándékos gyújtogatás történhetett.
Helyi sajtójelentések szerint az őrizetbe vett tűzoltó másfél éve vett részt a chilei – önkéntesekből álló – tűzoltók munkájában. A valparaisói tűzoltóság parancsnoka elmondta: teljesen lesújtotta őket az eset, ilyen eddig soha nem fordult elő.
A nyomozók teljes egészében rekonstruálni tudták, hogy mit követett el a két gyújtogató. Ivan Navarro, a nyomozás vezetője elmondta: az erdészeti hatóságok egyik tisztségviselője volt az, aki a tűz hatékony elindításához szükséges ismeretekkel rendelkezett, ő választotta ki, hogy mikor és hol gyújtsanak tüzet ahhoz, hogy a lángok a lehető legnagyobb pusztítást okozzák.
A tűzgyújtáshoz használt anyagokat megtalálták az egyik őrizetbe vett lakásán. A nyomozók vizsgálják, hogy a két gyanúsítottnak köze lehet-e más, korábbi erdőtüzek előidézéséhez is.

A chilei hatóságok jelentése szerint hétfőre virradóra 112-re emelkedett a dél-amerikai ország középső részén tomboló erdőtüzek halálos áldozatainak száma, az elnök kétnapos nemzeti gyászt hirdetett.
A hatóságok szerint több száz ember eltűnt, a halálos áldozatok száma pedig tovább fog emelkedni, mivel egyre több holttestet találnak a felperzselt hegyoldalakon és a leégett lakóépületekben.

A hatóságok becslése szerint csupán Vina del Mar és Quilpué térségében mintegy 14 ezer lakóház vált a lángok martalékává.
A Vina del Mar térségben készített, a közösségi oldalakon megosztott drónfelvételeken elpusztult városrészek, a házak és autók maradványai között bolyongó emberek láthatók.
A tűzoltók a katonaság segítségével elsősorban azon dolgoztak, hogy meggátolják a tűz továbbterjedését a lakott területeken, a lángok megfékezésére helikoptereket is bevetnek. A legsúlyosabban érintett területeken kijárási tilalmat rendeltek el.
Gabriel Boric chilei elnök vasárnapi televíziós beszédében elmondta, hogy a katasztrófa miatt szükségállapotot rendelt el, hétfőtől pedig kétnapos nemzeti gyászt hirdetett az országban, amely meglátása szerint „nagyon súlyos tragédiával” néz szembe.
Carolina Tohá belügyminiszter úgy vélte, ez Chilében a legsúlyosabb természeti katasztrófa a 2010-es földrengés óta, amikor ötszázan haltak meg. Hozzátette, a tűznek minden bizonnyal még további áldozatai lesznek.

Az eset 1986. július 2-án, az Augusto Pinochet katonai rendszere elleni nemzetközi tiltakozások hátterében történt. Ezen a napon egy katonai járőr őrizetbe vett, megvert, benzinnel leöntött és felgyújtott két chilei fiatalt. A 18 éves Carmen Gloria Quintana egyetemi hallgató túlélte a súlyos sérüléseket, nem úgy, mint Rodrigo Rojas de Negri, a 19 éves fotós, aki négy nappal később meghalt.
Ez az ítélet „véget vet egy hosszú és nagyon embert próbáló folyamatnak, amelynek során meg kellett dönteni a diktátor által felállított hivatalos elméletet, amely szerint a fiatalok azért gyújtották fel magukat, mert gyújtóbombát viseltek a ruhájuk alatt” – nyilatkozta Nelson Caucoto, az egyik áldozat, Quintana ügyvédje, akit egy helyi rádióállomás idézett. Több mint ötven éve, 1973. szeptember 11-én az Augusto Pinochet tábornok vezette chilei hadsereg megdöntötte Salvador Allende elnök kormányát.
A véres hatalomátvétel és az azt végrehajtó Pinochet tábornok megítélése a mai napig ellentmondásos, és mélyen megosztja a chilei társadalmat. A másfél évtizedig tartó szükségállapot idején legkevesebb 3200 embert meggyilkoltak, tízezreket megkínoztak és börtönbe zártak, egy időre még a főváros stadionját is koncentrációs táborrá alakították.

A Reuters beszámolójából kiderül, miszerint két ember elhunyt, csaknem 34 ezer főt evakuáltak, s mintegy 38 ezren áram nélkül maradtak a heves esőzések által sújtott Chilében, az ország középső és déli részén.
A szélsőséges időjárás több falut elvágott a külvilágtól, amely által több mint 26 ezer fő a legalapvetőbb szolgáltatásokhoz sem fér hozzá, mindemellett számos lakóház megrongálódott, amely által rengetegen elvesztették otthonaikat.
Hozzátették, a chilei elnök, Gabriel Boric hétfőn katasztrófahelyzetet hirdetett, majd ellátogatott az esőzések által egyik legsúlyosabban érintett területre, a fővárostól, Santiagótól mintegy 250 kilométerre délre.
A helyi hatóságok figyelmeztetést adtak ki, ugyanis az előrejelzések szerint további esőzésekre lehet számítani a hegyvidéki területeken, amelyek áradásokat és földcsuszamlásokat okozhatnak. Az elnök arra kérte az érintett lakosokat, hogy tartsák be az evakuálási utasításokat.
A kormány júniusban is katasztrófahelyzetet hirdetett, miután az elmúlt 30 év legsúlyosabb esőzései sújtották az országot. Télen ugyanezen problémával kellett szembenézniük, amikor ezrek kerültek utcára, illetve számos utat le kellett zárni, s az El Nino-hatás miatt magasabb hőmérsékletre, szélsőséges időjárási jelenségekre számítanak.

A tájékoztatás szerint az ítéletidő miatt 1600-an kerestek menedéket szükségszállásokon. Az árvizek eddig 1500 házat sodortak el, és háromezernél is több házban okoztak károkat.
Két ember életét vesztette, másik négyet pedig eltűntként tartanak nyilván.
Az andoki országban a napok óta tartó esőzések miatt több folyó is kilépett a medréből, a viharok fákat csavartak ki és földcsuszamlásokat is okoztak. Számos út járhatatlanná vált.
A kormány szerint egyes régiókban 30 éve nem látott mennyiségű csapadék esett.
„A mostani esőzés egyértelmű jele annak, hogy az El Nino nevű időjárási jelenség, amely már több mint egy hónapja sújtja Kolumbiát, Ecuadort és Perut, és folyamatosan halad dél felé, immár elérte Chilét is” – szögezte le Fernando Santibánez, a fővárosi San Sebastián Egyetem meteorológusa a Bio Bio helyi rádiónak nyilatkozva.
Az El Nino a Csendes-óceán egy részének természetes, átmeneti és alkalmi felmelegedése, amely Dél-Amerikában általában heves esőzéseket okoz, de világszerte megváltoztatja az időjárási viszonyokat.

Sajtótájékoztatóján Carolina Tohá belügyminiszter elmondta, hogy az intenzív hőhullám okozta időjárási viszonyok miatt az oltás csak lassan halad.
A hatóságok bejelentették, hogy a 231 tűz közül jelenleg 80-at nagy erőkkel oltanak, 151-et ellenőrzés alá vontak.
Nuble és Bíobío régió után a kormány Araucanía térségét is katasztrófa sújtotta területnek nyilvánította.
Bár a területek viszonylag gyéren lakottak, sok, részben exportra termelő mezőgazdasági terület és erdős rész található a környéken.
A hét végén chilei tisztségviselők bejelentették, hogy több ország, köztük az Egyesült Államok, Spanyolország és Argentína is segítséget ajánlott fel.
A tüzek egy szélsőséges hőhullám miatt keletkeznek, a hőmérséklet megközelíti a 40 Celsius-fokot, ami miatt a hatóságok a 2017-eshez hasonló katasztrófától tartanak. Abban az évben egy hatalmas erdőtűz tizenegy embert ölt meg, mintegy hatezer embert érintett, több mint 1500 házat pusztított el, és 467 ezer hektárnyi földet tett tönkre.

A halottak között van egy tűzoltó is, több civil mellett pedig egy mentőhelikopter pilótája és az ő segédje is meghalt. A hatóságok szerint eddig nagyjából 14 ezer hektárt égettek fel a lángok. Biobío és Ñuble egyébként elsősorban erdős, illetve mezőgazdasági terület, a több tucat különböző helyszínen terjedő tűz ezért könnyen utat talál magának. A régiókban nagyjából kétmillió ember él.
A meteorológusok arra számítanak, hogy a helyzet tovább fog romlani, a térségben ugyanis még napokig 35 fok körüli hőség várható, és a szél is erős. A földi egységek mellett az oltásban jelenleg 63 légi jármű vesz részt, és hamarosan Brazíliából és Argentínából is segítség érkezhet.
Gabriel Boric elnök megszakítja nyári vakációját, hogy a térségbe utazzon. Az államfő arról beszélt, hogy a jelek szerint a tüzek kitörésének hátterében egyes esetekben szándékos gyújtogatás is állhat.
