Az omlást valószínűleg a térségben, Santiagótól 100 kilométerre délre, Rancagua közelében regisztrált 4,2-es erősségű földrengés okozta.űA bányaomlás következtében egy munkás biztosan életét vesztette, öten pedig a bányában rekedtek, az ő sorsukról semmit sem tudni. Aurora Williams chilei bányaügyi miniszter a mentési munkálatok idejére leállíttatta a kitermelést az El Tenientében, aminek hatására a réz ára azonnal emelkedni kezdett a világpiacon. Ahogy arról korábban beszámoltunk, Súlyos, 7,5-ös erősségű földrengés rázta meg Chile déli partvidékét péntek reggel, melynek következtében szökőárriadót adtak ki és evakuálást rendeltek el a Magallanes régióban.
Az Európai-Mediterrán Szeizmológiai Központ (EMSC) jelentése szerint ezúttal a földrengés epicentruma a közel 58 ezer lakosú argentin Ushuaia városától 291 kilométerre délkeletre, és 523 kilométerre délkeletre a 117 ezer lakosú chilei Punta Arenas városától volt, 10 kilométeres mélységben.

Szökőárriadót adtak ki és evakuálást rendeltek el, miután hatalmas, 7,5-es erősségű földrengés rázta meg Chile és Argentína partvidékét – írta a The Sun.
A rengés a Drake-átjáró térségében, Puerto Williamstől délre, a Horn-fok és az Antarktisz között történt, 6,2 mérföldes (kb. 10 km) mélységben – erősítette meg az Egyesült Államok Geológiai Szolgálata (USGS). A Chilei Haditengerészet Hidrográfiai és Oceanográfiai Szolgálata (SHOA) szerint a földrengés 135 mérfölddel (kb. 217 km) délre történt Puerto Williamstől.
A rengés következtében a chilei Nemzeti Katasztrófavédelmi Szolgálat (SENAPRED) azonnal elrendelte a part menti területek evakuálását a Magallanes régióban, valamint elővigyázatossági figyelmeztetést adott ki a chilei antarktiszi területekre is.
A közösségi médiában és hírügynökségi felvételeken drámai jelenetek láthatók: civilek sietve hagyták el épületeiket és biztonsági gyülekezőhelyekre indultak. A földrengés helyi idő szerint reggel 9 óra előtt történt.
A hatóságok jelenleg is elemzik a földrengés hatásait az infrastruktúrára és az alapvető közszolgáltatásokra, és az eseményről hivatalos jelentésekben számolnak majd be. Egyelőre nem érkezett jelentés súlyosabb károkról vagy sérültekről. A Magallanes régió és a közeli lakott területek jelenleg is fokozott készültségben vannak, a hatóságok arra kérik a lakosokat, kövessék az evakuálási és biztonsági utasításokat.

A halálesetek egy verekedés után következtek be, amely előtt a rendőrség blokkolt mintegy 100 szurkolót, akik megpróbáltak bejutni a Santiago-i Monumental stadionba.
„Csak annyit tudni, hogy az egyik kerítés zúzta szét a két áldozatot, és a nyomozás folyamatban van annak megállapítására, hogy a rendőrautónak köze volt-e a halálesetekhez”, mondta Francisco Morales helyi ügyész.

A rengést Chile középső és északi régióiban, köztük a fővárosban, Santiagóban is érezni lehetett. A chilei nemzeti katasztrófamegelőzés és -elhárítás részéről nem érkezett jelentés károkról vagy vészhelyzetekről.
A chilei oceanográfiai szolgálat közölte, hogy a rengés „nem felelt meg a szökőár keletkezéséhez szükséges feltételeknek” a dél-amerikai ország partjainál.

A BBC azt írja, hogy a helyszínre óriási erőkkel vonultak ki a tűzoltók helyi idő szerint péntek délután.

Chilében a repülőgép-szerencsétlenség következtében hét ember vesztette életét, köztük a repülőgép pilótája is. Erről a BioBioChile ügynökség számolt be a napokban.
„Sajnos megerősítették, hogy nincs túlélője a repülőgép-szerencsétlenségnek” – áll az illetékes hatóságok jelentésében.
Az ügynökség szerint a gép Coyayque-ből Chile Chicóba indult, majd helyi idő szerint délelőtt 10 óra 20 perckor eltűnt a radarról a szélsőséges időjárási körülmények miatt. A gép valószínűleg kényszerleszállást hajtott végre.

Egy tűzoltót és az erdészeti hatóságok egy tisztségviselőjét gyanúsítják azzal Chilében, hogy szándékosan idézhették elő a februárban az ország középső részén pusztító erdőtüzeket, amelyekben 137 ember életét vesztette.
A két férfit helyi idő szerint pénteken őrizetbe vették – jelentette be a chilei rendőrség.
Az erdőtüzek két kisebb, egyidejűleg keletkezett tűzből alakultak ki február 2-án Vina del Mar és Valparaiso város közelében. A lángok gyorsan terjedtek a hőség és az erős szél miatt. A hatóságok kezdetektől fogva gyanították, hogy szándékos gyújtogatás történhetett.
Helyi sajtójelentések szerint az őrizetbe vett tűzoltó másfél éve vett részt a chilei – önkéntesekből álló – tűzoltók munkájában. A valparaisói tűzoltóság parancsnoka elmondta: teljesen lesújtotta őket az eset, ilyen eddig soha nem fordult elő.
A nyomozók teljes egészében rekonstruálni tudták, hogy mit követett el a két gyújtogató. Ivan Navarro, a nyomozás vezetője elmondta: az erdészeti hatóságok egyik tisztségviselője volt az, aki a tűz hatékony elindításához szükséges ismeretekkel rendelkezett, ő választotta ki, hogy mikor és hol gyújtsanak tüzet ahhoz, hogy a lángok a lehető legnagyobb pusztítást okozzák.
A tűzgyújtáshoz használt anyagokat megtalálták az egyik őrizetbe vett lakásán. A nyomozók vizsgálják, hogy a két gyanúsítottnak köze lehet-e más, korábbi erdőtüzek előidézéséhez is.
