Christian Cardona volt máltai gazdasági miniszter 350 ezer eurót fizetett Daphne Caruana Galizia oknyomozó újságíró meggyilkolásáért – közölte hétfőn Melvin Theuma az ügyben illetékes bíróság előtt tett tanúvallomásában.
Christian Cardona, volt máltai gazdasági miniszter Melvin Theuma – aki már korábban beismerő vallomást tett arról, hogy közvetítőként tevékenykedett – már eddig is lényeges információkkal látta el a nyomozókat kegyelemért cserében. Kijelentette, hogy a bérgyilkos fizetségét egy férfitól kapta, aki a januárig gazdasági tárcavezetőként szolgáló Chris Cardona nevében járt el.
Theuma azt állította, hogy a fizetséget azon felül kapta, amit az ügy másik gyanúsítottjától, Yorgen Fenech üzletembertől kapott. The Times of Malta című lap szerint a volt miniszter hazugságon alapuló sületlenségként utasította vissza Theuma tanúvallomását.
Cardona a botrány nyomán lemondott parlamenti mandátumáról, de továbbra is megtarthatta a kormányzó máltai Munkáspárt alelnöki tisztségét.
Daphne Caruana Galizia oknyomozó újságírót 2017 októberében egy autójába rejtett pokolgéppel gyilkolták meg. Az újságíró nyomozásaival számos korrupciós ügyet derített fel, ami miatt több magas rangú politikus és kormányzati tisztviselő került kellemetlen helyzetbe.
Galiziának nem sokkal a halála előtt információk kerültek birtokába egy olyan erőműberuházásról, amelyben Yorgen Fenech is érdekeltséggel bír. A gyilkosság megrendelői sokáig homályban maradtak.
Az áttörést Fenech őrizetbe vétele jelentette 2019. november 20-án, amikor jachtján el akart hajózni Máltáról.
A máltai ügyészség november 30-án emelt vádat az üzletember ellen Galizia meggyilkolásának kitervelése miatt. A vádhatóság szerint társtettesként terheli őt felelősség. A milliárdos tagadta bűnösségét. A gyilkosság végrehajtása miatt további három ember ellen emeltek vádat, ők szintén tagadták bűnösségüket.
