Egy másolatra cserélték ki és ellopták a leghíresebb Churchillről készült portréfotót Kanadában.
Arról a felvételről van szó, amelyet 1941-ben készített egy kanadai fotós, Yousuf Karsh – és amelyet a legtöbb ember láthatott a történelemkönyvekben az egykori brit miniszterelnökről (2016 óta ugyanez az ábrázolás látható az ötfontos bankjegyeken is).
A több mint százezer dollár (átszámítva körülbelül 41 millió forint) értékű portrét 1998 óta az ottawai Fairmont Chateau Laurier hotelben őrizték eddig. Tavaly szilveszter környékén azonban valaki ellopta és egy másolatra cserélte ki, ezt pedig csak most, nyolc hónap után vették észre.
A CNN szerint a hotel dolgozói a múlt hétvégén is csak arra figyeltek fel, hogy a kép egy kicsit elmozdult, és hogy a kerete máshogy nézett ki, mint a többié (a portrét ugyanis egy nagyobb Yousuf Karsh-portrégyűjtemény részeként állították ki a szállodában).
Ráadásul most még azt sem tudják biztosan, hogy mikor történhetett a bűncselekmény. Egyelőre mindössze azt valószínűsítik, hogy a híres műtárgyat valamikor 2021. december 25. és 2022. január 6. közt lopták el – és ezt is csak azáltal, hogy a hotel vendégei beküldtek néhány fotót, amelyet a tavalyi év végén és az idei elején készítettek.
Az ügyben a kanadai rendőrség nyomozást indított. Mindeközben az FBI egyik korábbi nyomozója, Robert Wittman azt valószínűsítette a kanadai CTV-nek nyilatkozva, hogy a hotel valamelyik dolgozója is érintett lehet a lopásban.
Egy ilyen helyzetben általában nem egy egyszerű lopásról vagy betörésről van szó, hanem arról, hogy egy belsős – akinek hozzáférése van, aki tudja, hogy mit kell keresni, és hogy milyen biztonsági intézkedések vannak – segíti az elkövetőket – mondta a volt nyomozó.
