A munkaügyi felügyelők szerint a gazdaságban nagyon rossz körülmények között tartották a dolgozókat, továbbá túl magas nikotin-koncentrációt mutattak ki szervezetükben.
A brazil munkaügyi felügyelők hétfőn közölték, rabszolgatartással vádoltak meg egy brazil dohányexportőrt, amiért embertelen körülmények között tartotta munkásait a farmon. Kilenc munkavállalót – akik közül öt 9 és 16 év közötti gyermek is volt – mentettek ki a múlt héten egy Venancio Airesben található farmról, amelynek kizárólagos szerződése volt a CTA Continental Tobaccos Alliance vállalattal.
A munkaügyi felügyelők szerint a munkavállalókat nagyon rossz körülmények között találták meg abban a farmon, ahol a Brazíliában kötelező minimálbér kevesebb mint egyharmadát fizették nekik, de hiányoztak a védőfelszerelések is, így a dolgozók nagy koncentrációjú nikotinnak voltak kitéve.
A farmon dolgozók akut mérgezéssel küzdöttek, ami miatt szűnni nem akaró hányingerük volt, de több alkalommal rosszul is lettek munka közben, a legszomorúbb pedig, hogy a farmon dolgoztatott gyermeknél is ezt tapasztalták a munkaügyi felügyelők.
A CTA, mely több mint 50 országba szállít dohányt azt állította, nem tartozik felelősséggel a dolgozókért, azonban szerződése volt a gazdaság tulajdonosával, aki a dolgozók felvételéért felelős. A dohány feldolgozására gyárral is rendelkező társaság hozzátette, kapcsolata a dohánytermelőkkel “kizárólag kereskedelmi jellegű volt”, továbbá azt állítja, aktív programokat indítottak a gyermekmunka elleni küzdelem érdekében.
Brazíliában a rabszolgaságot kényszermunkaként definiálják, mely kiterjed az adósság miatti rabságra, a megalázó munkakörülményekre, az egészséget veszélyeztető hosszú munkaórákra, és minden olyan jellegű munkára, mely csorbítja az emberi méltóságot. Mikor Brazília 1995-ben először állította fel rabszolgaság-ellenes munkacsoportját, több mint 55 ezer embert találtak rabszolgasághoz hasonló körülmények között az országban.
A munkaügyi ellenőrzés most rávilágított arra, hogy a vállalatoknak felelősséget kell vállalniuk a leszerződtetett gazdaságokban biztosított munkakörülményekért, továbbá állami szinten kell ellenőrizni a gazdaságok működését annak érdekében, hogy minden dolgozó számára biztosított legyen a biztonságos munkavégzés.
