Az Igazságosság és Fejlődés Pártjának (AKP) vezetője, Törökország elnöke, Recep Tayyip Erdogan 2014 és 2020 között 38.581 peres eljárást indított az elnök személyének megsértése vádjával. Az adatokat Gülizar Bicer-Karaca, az ellenzéki Köztársasági Néppárt (CHP) képviselője hozta nyilvánosságra.
Bicer-Karaca az adatokhoz hozzátette, hogy az Erdogant megelőző öt elnök összesen indított 1.816 ilyen típusú pert.
Az első nagyobb arányú ugrás az ilyen perekben Erdogan közvetlen elődje alatt történt, Abdullah Gül elnök 7 év alatt közel 850 eljárást indított, és már az is több mint négyszeres emelkedés volt az ő elődjéhez viszonyítva. Ehhez képest Erdogan alatt több mint 2000 százalékkal emelkedtek az elnöki személy megsértéséért indított eljárások.
A most közölt adatok szerint a személyére kissé érzékeny török elnök által indított sérelmi pereskedésekben
Erdogan autokratikus vezetési stílusát jól mutatja a különböző jogcímeken indított büntetőperek megdöbbentően magas száma. A 2016-os puccskísérlet másnapján már 3000 bírót tartóztattak le Törökországban és mintegy 125 ezer közalkalmazottat rúgtak ki állásából.
A másik gyakori büntetőper-típus a „terrorizmus támogatása”, amelynek alapján előszeretettel citálnak bíróság elé, és ítélnek hosszas börtönbüntetésekre ellenzéki politikusokat, vagy éppen újságírókat is. Szintén a 2016-os puccskísérlet után tartóztatták le többek közt a kurdbarát ellenzéki HDP akkori két társelnökét, Selahattin Demirtaşt és Figen Yüksekdagt is ilyen váddal. A két politikus azóta is börtönben van, a tárgyalásuk nem nagyon halad. Eddig csak két vádpontban hirdettek ítéletet Demirtaş ellen, a többit négy éve folyamatosan halasztják.
A 2019-es helyhatósági választásokon a HDP politikusai összesen hatvanöt településen nyertek, mára azonban már csak hat polgármesterük maradt. A többi helyen a kormány terrorizmus vádjával egyszerűen eltávolította a kurd politikusokat pozícióikból, helyükre pedig saját embereit ültette.
