A közlemény volt az első alkalom, hogy a China Renaissance indokolta alapítója eltűnését. Ugyanakkor nem közölt részleteket a nyomozásról vagy Pao Fan hollétéről, teszi hozzá a lap.
A China Renaissance-t 2005-ben alapító Pao Fangot a kínai technológiai ipar titánjának tekintik, aki számos olyan üzletet hajtott végre, amely az online fogyasztói gazdaságot alakította. Egy 2018-as cikkében azt írta, hogy cége a kínai nyilvánosság által ismert internetes vállalatok 70 százalékával került már üzleti kapcsolatba („keresztezték egymás útját”, ahogyan fogalmazott).
