Ilyen súlyos erdőtüzek, mint most augusztusban, tizenkét éve nem voltak a brazíliai Amazonas esőerdeiben.
Egy hónap alatt 33 116 kisebb-nagyobb tüzet észleltek a hatóságok, a csúcsdöntő nap augusztus 22-e volt, akkor 24 óra leforgása alatt 3358 tüzet regisztráltak.
Az 1998 óta vezetett műholdas adatok alapján az idei nyáron 25 százalékkal nőtt meg a tűzveszélyes gócok száma a negyedszázados átlagértékhez képest.
„Az elmút 15 évben az idei első negyedévben történt a legtöbb erdőirtás nálunk. Január ás augusztus között pedig 18 százalékkal növekedett az erdőtüzek száma tavalyihoz képest” – fogalmazott Rómulo Batista, a brazíliai Greenpeace szóvivője.
Porto Velhóban napokig füstköd szállt a városra a gyakori tüzek miatt.
„A 2022-es erdőtüzek hatalmasok voltak. A napfelkelték ködösek voltak a szmogtól, a nap pedig rettenetesen forrón sütött végig” – mondta egy porto velhói közigazgatási szakember.

Brazília megkezdte hétfőn katonai erők telepítését az amazóniai esőerdők védelmére – közölte Hamilton Mourao alelnök. A hadsereg bevetésével arra reagálnak, hogy idén minden korábbinál nagyobb az erdőirtások mértéke, pedig az erdőtüzek szokásos évszaka még el sem kezdődött, írja az MTI.
A brazil hadsereg – a környezetvédelmi hatóságokkal, a rendőrséggel és más kormányzati intézményekkel karöltve – elsőként a bolíviai határ mentén lévő Rondonia államban kezdett műveletet az ottani védett erdőségekben zajló illegális környezetpusztítás ellen – mondta Mourao a brazil kormány több miniszterével közösen tartott sajtóértekezletén.
Fernando Azevedo e Silva védelmi miniszter az újságíróknak azt mondta, hogy a hatóságok műveleti támaszpontokat létesítenek három amazóniai városban, és az e célra mozgósított 3800 katonával razziákat kezdenek az illegális fakitermelések és más bűncselekmények megfékezésére. A műveletek finanszírozására kezdetnek 60 millió realt (több mint 3,3 milliárd forint) szánnak.
A kormány által pénteken közzétett friss adatok szerint az idei év első négy hónapjában 55 százalékkal nagyobb erdőterületet irtottak ki Amazónia Brazíliához tartozó területein, mint a tavalyi év azonos időszakában, ami több mint 1200 négyzetkilométernyi esőerdő idei elpusztítását jelenti. Az erdőirtások mértéke tavaly 11 éves csúcsra emelkedett, ami a nemzetközi közösség heves tiltakozását váltotta ki, mondván Brazília és mindenekelőtt az ország elnöke nagyon keveset tesz a Föld legnagyobb esőerdőinek védelmében.
Jair Bolsonaro brazil elnök a múlt héten adott újabb felhatalmazást a hadsereg erdőtüzek és erdőirtások elleni amazóniai bevetésére. Az elnöki rendelet kilenc amazóniai államra vonatkozik, valamint a természetvédelmi területekre és az indián törzsek lakóhelyére.
A tavalyi hasonló felhatalmazáshoz képest Brazília idén három hónappal korábban kezdte meg a katonák bevetését.
