Több ember is súlyos fagyási sérüléseket szenvedett Kansas Cityben, a Chiefs és a Miami Dolphins mérkőzése alatt az amerikaifutball-bajnokság rájátszásában.
Egy Missouri állambeli kórházban állítólag egy tucat emberen végeztek amputációt, mind súlyos fagyási sérüléseket szenvedtek a január 13-i Dolphins és Kansas City Chiefs összecsapásán.
A rekordközeli hideg miatt a mentők 69 embert láttak el a meccs alatt, melyet sokáig meg sem akartak rendezni, miután aznap megdőlt a hidegrekord a városban. A mínusz 20 fokos hideg ellenére óriási volt a tömeg a lelátón, holott a széllökéseknek köszönhetően a hőérzet elérhette a mínusz 33 fokot is.
A sérültek pontos számát nem hozták nyilvánosságra, azonban a kórház közleménye szerint 12 páciensnél ujj- és lábujj-amputációt kellett végrehajtani, ráadásul további műtétekre lehet számítani.
A meccs azután került megrendezésre, hogy riasztást adott ki az amerikai meteorológiai szolgálat a hideg idő és az erős széllökések miatt. Feljegyzések alapján a Chiefs–Dolphins meccs volt az NFL történetének negyedik leghidegebb mérkőzése.

Az Amerikai Egyesült Államok több államában okozott további baleseteket, áramkimaradásokat és tanítási szünetet a téli időjárás csütörtökön, a keleti partra a következő napokra újabb jelentős havazást jeleztek előre a meteorológusok.
New York városára több mint két év után kedden hullott ismét jelentősebb hó, és pénteken további 5 centimétert várnak, ami miatt figyelmeztetést adtak ki.
Csütörtökön a New York állambeli Rochester város repülőterén leszállás után, már gurulás közben lecsúszott az aszfaltról egy kisebb utasszállító repülő, amelynek fedélzetét a tűzoltók segítségével tudták elhagyni az utasok. Az incidensben senki nem sérült meg.
A keleti parti New Jersey és Pennsylvania államok több térségében péntekre szintén további havazást várnak.
A fővárosban, Washingtonban péntekre virradóra újabb több centiméter hó hullott, ami jelentősen lelassította a közlekedést. Maryland, Virginia és Nyugat-Virginia állam több megyéjében az újabb havazás miatt péntekre iskolai szünetet rendeltek el. Nyugat-Virginia állam kormányzója még csütörtökön veszélyhelyzetet hirdetett.
A nyugati parti Oregon kormányzója csütörtök éjszaka hirdetett szükséghelyzetet, mert az állam több megyéje nehezen tud megbirkózni a napokkal ezelőtt hullott fagyott eső okozta károkkal, aminek nyomán fák dőltek utakra, villanyvezetékek szakadtak le. Oregonban a péntek hajnali összesítés szerint még mindig több mint 100 ezer háztartásban szünetelt az áramszolgáltatás.

A hatóságok szerint az Egyesült Államokban az elmúlt két hétben kialakult viharok és télies időjárási körülmények miatt 45 ember veszítette életét. Három embert halálos áramütés ért egy leszakadt vezeték miatt, amikor kiszálltak egy autóból Oregon államban.
A télies időjárás a déli Tennessee államban is további fennakadásokat okoz. Az ott rendkívül ritka, helyenként mínusz 15 Celsius-foknál alacsonyabb hőmérséklet komoly terhelést ró az elektromos hálózatra.
Nashville városának egyes részeire vasárnap óta 22 centiméter hó hullott. A helyi összegzések szerint a télies körülmények miatt az elmúlt 5 napban 14 ember veszítette életét az állam területén.
Az északnyugati Washington államban, Seattle városában a nagy hidegben 5 ember halálát okozta kihűlés az utcán.
Észak-Dakota államban a Bakken olajmező létesítményeiben okozott károkat az ott szokatlanul nagy hideg. A beszámolók szerint a mínusz 56 Celsius-fokos hőérzet mind a dolgozókra, mind a berendezésekre komoly terhelést rótt, megnövelve balesetek bekövetkeztének esélyét.

Mintegy ezer jármű ragadt a hóban egy hegyi autópályán és legalább 21 ember – köztük 9 gyerek – halálra fagyott az autójában, miután erős havazás volt Észak-Pakisztánban, Murree közelében. Voltak olyan autók, amelyekre fák dőltek rá.
A kormány bevetette a hadsereget, hogy letakarítsák az utakat és kimentsék azokat, akik még mindig az autóikban vannak, illetve élelmet és pokrócokat osszanak nekik. Murree-t katasztrófa sújtotta övezetnek nyilvánították, Punjab tartomány vezetője, Usman Buzdar vészhelyzetet rendelt el a kórházakban, rendőrőrsökön, kormányirodákban.
Az elmúlt napokban legalább 100 ezer autóval érkeztek turisták Murreebe, hogy megnézzék a havat. Emiatt pedig a városból ki- és befele vezető utakon is óriási dugók alakultak ki. Sheikh Rashid Ahmed belügyminiszter azt mondta, 15-20 éve nem volt ott akkora tömeg, ez okozta a krízist.
A havazást előre jelezte a meteorológiai szolgálat, ám ellenzéki politikusok szerint a tartomány vezetői nem figyelmeztették az embereket, nem kezelték megfelelően a tömeget, és ez vezetett a tragédiához.
Imran Khan miniszterelnök később azt írta Twitteren, hogy vizsgálatot rendelt el az ügyben, és új szabályozást vezetnek be, hogy megelőzzék a hasonló eseteket.
