A Bundeswehr szerint a tűzharcba amerikai és német katonák is belekeveredtek, de nekik nem esett bajuk.
A tálib lázadók – akiket húsz évvel ezelőtt fosztott meg hatalmuktól az amerikaiak vezette nemzetközi katonai koalíció – augusztus 15-én, néhány óra leforgása alatt harc nélkül elfoglalták Kabult, majd bejelentették, hogy véget ért a húsz éve tartó afganisztáni háború.

A nemzetközi koalícióban részt vevő országok és más államok a kabuli reptérről repülőgépekkel menekítik ki saját állampolgáraikat, és azokat az afgánokat, akik ottani missziójuk során együttműködtek velük, és a tálib hatalomátvétel miatt most veszélyben érzik az életüket.
A repülőtéren napokon át káosz uralkodott. A légi kikötőn belül a koalíciós katonák – elsősorban amerikaiak – próbálják fenntartani a rendet, kívül pedig a tálib fegyveresek.
Jake Sullivan, az amerikai elnök nemzetbiztonsági tanácsadója vasárnap arra figyelmeztetett, hogy dzsihadisták támadást intézhetnek a reptér ellen, és folyamatos fenyegetésről van szó.
Korábban olyan hírek láttak napvilágot, hogy az Iszlám Állam terrorszervezet merényletre készülhet ott.
