A fegyvereket hatósági felügyelet mellett beolvasztotta egy acélgyártó cég. Az engedély nélkül tartott lőfegyverek többségét lakossági bejelentés eredményeként kobozta el a rendőrség. A 33 ezerből csaknem 31 ezer pisztoly és revolver volt, 2500 pedig puska – köztük 900 vadászfegyver.
A tavalyi pénzügyi évben 52 ezer lőfegyvert semmisíttetett meg a dél-afrikai rendőrség. A mostani 33 ezer lőfegyver az idei pénzügyi év első felének „termése”, így valószínű, hogy felülmúlja majd az egész évi mennyiség a tavalyit.
A rendőrség ezúttal is figyelmeztette a lakosságot, hogy az illegális fegyvertartás bűncselekmény, és ha meghal valaki, aki engedéllyel tartott lőfegyvert, azt hozzátartozóinak be kell szolgáltatniuk.
