Két ember meghalt, 10 másik pedig eltűnt, miután egy Kubából érkező hajó 26 kilométerre a floridai Key West partjaitól csütörtökön felborult – közölte az amerikai parti őrség.
Nyolc másik utast kimentett a parti őrség egyik járműve, amely rutinszerű járőrözés közben több embert is észrevett a vízben – áll a közleményben.
A parti őrség délkeleti részlegének tweetje szerint délután 1 óra körül két holttestet húztak ki a vízből.
“Munkatársaink a túlélők keresésére összpontosítanak” – mondta Seth Haynes rangidős főnök, a Key West-i parancsnoki központ felügyelője a közleményben.
“Egész éjszaka folytatjuk az eltűntként jelentett személyek keresését, és ha bármely tengerész lát vagy hall valamit, lehetőség szerint nyújtson segítséget, és lépjen kapcsolatba a parti őrséggel.”
Az utasok elmondták, hogy vasárnap érkeztek a kubai Puerto de Marielből, és valamikor szerda este borultak fel – közölte a parti őrség.
A túlélők már biztonságban vannak, élelmet, vizet és orvosi ellátást is kapnak – áll a parti őrség közleményében. Az eltűnt utasok keresése a környező vizeken délután 5 órakor még folyt, a keresésben több hajó és helikopter is részt vesz – írja a New York Post.

Eddig tisztázatlan okokból kifolyólag felborult egy utasszállító hajó a nigériai Kebbi állam egyik nagyobb édesvizi taván, a túlélőket még mindig keresik.
Az incidens szerda délután történt Wara város közelében, a Kainji-tó partvidékén, amely a Niger folyó középső szakaszán található – adta hírül a Reuters hírügynökség a tartomány szóvivője nyomán.
A fedélzeten összesen 200-an tartózkodtak, minden a szomszédos Nigerből szerettek volna átjutni a határon. A szóvivő, Yahaya Sarki megerősítette, rengeteg áldozat lehet, a holttesteket, illetve a túlélőket még mindig keresik a katasztrófavédelem kivezényelt munkatársai.
Az egyik túlélő, Buhari Abubakar elmondta, tudomása szerint eddig 40 embert sikerült kimenekíteniük a tóból és a hatalmas utasszállító hajó alól, azonban több tucatnyi személynek nyoma veszett, köztük nőknek és gyerekeknek is.
Szerda este a Kanji-tó vize öt holttestet mosott a partra, Wara lakosai pedig arra számítanak, hogy az elkövetkező napokban további hullák bukkanhatnak fel a strand közelében, ezért sokan nem merik meglátogatni a helyiek által egyébként közkedvelt partvidéket.
Szemtanúk beszámolói alapján a hajó túl volt terhelve, és nem bírta el a sok embert és rakományt, ezért történhetett meg a tragédia. Nigéria története egyik legsúlyosabb hajóbalesetét szenvedhette el, bár az áldozatok pontos száma egyelőre nem ismert.
Mint kiderült, a hajón főleg bányászok és hozzátartozóik utaztak, ők ugyanis a Niger folyó egyik oldalága mentén felfedezett aranylelőhelyen dolgoztak, és éppen hazafelé indultak a határ túloldalára.
