A baleset az Atlanti-óceán partján fekvő Rivers államban található Rumuekpében történt. Helyi források szerint az áldozatok száma tovább emelkedhet. A környezeti károkról egyelőre nem lehet tudni semmit. A hasonló szerencsétlenségek a múltban pusztító tüzekhez és a közeli vizek beszennyeződéséhez vezettek.

Akkor több mint ezer ember halt meg, akik olajat szivattyúztak egy megrepedt vezetékből.
