Matt Hancock brit egészségügyi miniszter a koronavírus miatti halálozási statisztika sürgős felülvizsgálatát rendelte pénteken az Egyesült Királyságban egy lehetséges, súlyos probléma miatt: olyanok is felkerülhettek a halálozási listákra, akik valójában nem a fertőzés következtében hunytak el.
Az Egyesült Királyságban a legutolsó adatok szerint 45 119-en haltak meg a Covid-19 betegségben. Ez azonban az Oxfordi Egyetem kutatása szerint közel sem pontos. Az angliai közegészségügyi hatóság (Public Health England, PHE) ugyanis a járvány kezdete óta automatikusan a koronavírus-fertőzésnek tulajdonította a halál okát, ha valakinél kimutatták a vírus jelenlétét, és később elhunyt, miközben az illető más betegség, vagy akár baleset miatt is meghalhatott.
Az Oxfordi Egyetem tanulmányában hangsúlyozta: a PHE adatfeldolgozási módszere nem egészen jó, ugyanis annak alapján Angliában senki nem gyógyulhat fel a Covid-19-ből.
Carl Heneghan professzor, az oxfordi intézet igazgatója a BBC-nek azt mondta: az is gyanús, hogy míg a brit egészségügyi szolgálat (NHS) napi 30-35 koronavírus miatti halálesetről számol be, addig a PHE adatai ennél sokkal nagyobb számot mutatnak.
