Az esetről Arturo Zaldivar, a legfelsőbb bíróság főbírája egy eljárást megszakítva adott hírt. Közölte, hogy a gyilkosság sebet ejtett az egész igazságszolgáltatási rendszeren és minden egyes mexikóin.
Fegyveres férfiak hatoltak be Uriel Villegas Ortiz bíró otthonában az állam azonos nevű fővárosában, Colimában, és két kiskorú lánya előtt ölték meg őt és a feleségét.
A helyi sajtó szerint Villegas február óta volt szövetségi bíró Colimában, előzőleg a szomszédos Jalisco államban volt bíró. Ő vezette a tárgyalást Ruben Oseguera ügyében, aki a rettegett jaliscói Új Generáció kartell vezetőjének, Nemesio Oseguera „El Menchónak” a fia.
Villegas utasítására szállították át két évvel ezelőtt Ruben Oseguerát egy oaxacai börtönben, majd februárban kiadták őt az Egyesült Államoknak.
A legfőbb ügyészség gyalázatos bűnténynek nevezte a gyilkosságot, és közölte, hogy saját hatáskörébe vonja a kivizsgálását. A szövetségi bírói tanács pedig bejelentette, hogy felülvizsgálja a szövetségi bírók és családtagjai védelmét szavatoló protokollokat.
A mexikói államok közül tavaly Colimában ölték meg a legtöbb embert. A legnagyobb, konténerhajók fogadására is alkalmas kikötővel rendelkező Colimát drogkartellek véres leszámolásai sújtják. Június elején, néhány héttel az eltűnése után egy jeltelen sírban találták meg egy colimai törvényhozó holttestét. Az áldozat Manuel López Obrador államfő pártjának volt a tagja.
A legsúlyosabb bűntényekben – például drogkereskedelem vagy fegyverbirtoklás ügyében – zömében szövetségi bírók járnak el Mexikóban. Egyeseket közülük védelmet kaptak, golyóálló üvegekkel ellátott gépkocsikat bocsátottak a rendelkezésükre.
Feltehetően gyakran fordul elő, hogy bűnszövetkezetek nyomást gyakorolnak bírókra, és öltek már meg a drogügyletekkel kapcsolatos eljárásokban érintett ügyvédeket is, de nagyon ritkán fordult elő, hogy szövetségi bírót öltek meg.
Legutóbb 2006-ban öltek meg egy szövetségi bírót, amikor gépkocsija elhaladt egy Mexikóváros melletti fegyház előtt, ahol drogterjesztő bűnbandák feltételezett főkolomposait tartják fogva.
