Sajtójelentések szerint a 15 és 26 év közötti áldozatok éppen a karácsonyt ünnepelték szombatra virradóra, amikor tüzet nyitottak rájuk. Az ügyben tíz gyanúsítottat vettek őrizetbe, akiknél hat lőfegyvert foglaltak le.
A hatóságok hangsúlyozták, hogy az áldozatok közül négyen büntetett előéletűek voltak, egyebek mellett bűnszervezeti tagság miatt marasztalták el őket.
A brazil sajtó a katonai rendőrségre hivatkozva arról számolt be, hogy a történtek hátterében rivalizáló bandák viszálya állhat.
