Nagy mennyiségű lávát okádott vasárnap a Szicília szigetén az Etna – közölte az olasz geofizikai és vulkanológiai intézet (INGV).
A tűzhányó felett 4,5 kilométer magas füstoszlop kígyózott, időnként robbanásokat lehetett látni és hallani.
A térség több településére, így Milo és Zafferana Etnea településekre hamu hullott, nagyobb károkról azonban nem érkeztek jelentések. A cataniai repülőtér forgalma zavartalan volt.
A mintegy 3350 méter magas Etna a világ egyik legaktívabb tűzhányója, legutóbb 1992-ben produkált nagyobb kitörést.

Európát is elérte – műholdfelvételek tanúsága szerint – az Egyesült Államok nyugati partvidékén pusztító heves erdőtüzek füstje – tudatta az Európai Unió Copernicus Légkörfigyelő Szolgálata (CAMS) szerdán.
A közlés szerint a Kalifornia, Oregon és Washington államban tomboló tüzek füstje 8000 kilométert megtéve elérte Nagy-Britanniát és Észak-Európa egyes részeit.
Az Amerika nyugati partvidékén égő tüzek 30,3 millió tonna szén-dioxidot bocsátottak ki augusztus közepe óta – mondta Mark Parrington, a CAMS vezető beosztású kutatója, az erdőtüzek szakértője.
Az európai légkörfigyelő szolgálat fennállásának 18 éve alatt még soha észleltek ilyen nagy kiterjedésű és intenzitású tűzvészt – hangsúlyozta a tudós, hozzátéve, hogy a tüzekből származó füst vastagsága óriási, a vonatkozó mérőszám, az aeroszol optikai mélység (AOD) 7-es szintű vagy azt meghaladó, és ezt független szárazföldi mérések is megerősítik.

A tavaly kezdődött ausztráliai bozóttüzek során keletkezett füst 445 ember halálát okozta, több ezren kórházba kerültek, az egészségügyi költségek meghaladták az 1,3 milliárd amerikai dollárt – derült ki kedden egy vizsgálat eredményének meghallgatásán, amiről az MTI számolt be.
A tavaly augusztustól idén márciusig tartó tűzvészben több mint 12 millió hektárnyi terület leégett, háromezernél több lakóház megsemmisült. Már az ország nyolc tartományából hatban pusztító lángokban 33 ember életét vesztette.
A keletkezett füst miatt megromlott a levegő minősége az ausztrál nagyvárosokban, köztük Sydneyben és a fővárosban, Canberrában, ahol januárban elérte a veszélyességi szint negyvenszeresét is.
A természeti katasztrófák elleni fellépés készültségét, az arra adandó választ és a későbbi helyreállítást vizsgáló független bizottság szakértőinek megállapítása szerint a lángok keltette füst az ausztrál lakosság nyolcvan százalékát hátrányosan érintette. Fay Johnson, a Tasmániai Egyetem professzora, környezetvédelmi egészségügyi szakértőnő azt mondta, hogy a füstnek súlyosabb egészségügyi következményei voltak, mint maguknak a lángoknak.
A füsttel közvetlenül összefüggésbe hozható egészségügyi költségek elérték az 1,3 milliárd amerikai dollárt. Ez az összeg négyszer nagyobb annál, mint amit 2002 és 2003 Ausztráliában költöttek, amikor a kontinensnyi ország történetében a második legnagyobb és legsúlyosabb bozóttűz tombolt – hangoztatta Johnson.
Összesen 445 haláleset tulajdonítható a bozóttüzek keltette füstnek. Ezt egy, a kórházi felvételeket és a levegőminőség közötti összefüggéseket vizsgáló tanulmány mutatta ki. A felmérés azt is megállapította, hogy 3340 kórházi felvétel szív- és tüdőbetegséggel volt kapcsolatos, további 1373 pedig asztmatikus megbetegedéssel. Ezek mindegyike a bozóttüzeknek tulajdonítható – fejtette ki a kutató.
