A perben 10 személy szerepel felperesként, köztük az üldöztetések nyolc közvetlen áldozata, egy fogságban elhunyt személy lánya és egy időközben elhalálozott személy örököse.
Az exbelügyminiszter perbe fogását az teszi lehetővé, hogy Svájc 2011-ben törvénybe iktatta az egyetemes joghatóság elvét, amely alapján Svájcban is bíróság elé lehet állítani a külföldön történt legsúlyosabb bűncselekmények elkövetőit, ha az országban tartózkodnak.
Sonko, aki 2006 és 2016 között volt belügyminiszter, elmenekült Gambiából, miután összekülönbözött Yahya Jammeh akkori elnökkel, aki néhány hónappal később maga is megbukott.
Gambiából Svédországba, majd Svájcba menekült, utóbbiban menedékkérelme benyújtása utána 2017-ben a hatóságok letartóztatták.
A svájci ügyészek negyvennél is több interjút készítettek a felperesekkel, tanúkkal és informátorokkal, miközben hatszor látogattak el a 2,5 millió lakosú Gambiába a nyomozás során.

Anil Vidzs elmondta, hogy 12 szabálytalanságot találtak az újdelhi székhelyű Maiden Pharmaceuticals vállalat telephelyén. Az ott gyártott termékek közül négy a megengedettnél több etilénglikolt és dietilén-glikolt tartalmazott. E két összetevő – amelyet sokszor alkalmaznak a drágább, oldószerként használatos glicerin helyett – nagy mennyiségben mérgező, és vesekárosodást okozhat.
A Maiden ügyvezető igazgatója, Nares Kumár Gojal nem reagált a bejelentésre, de a múlt héten azt mondta a Reuters hírügynökségnek: a vállalat kapcsolatba lépett a megrendelővel annak érdekében, hogy kiderítse, mi történt Gambiában.
A gambiai kormány szeptemberben jelentette be, hogy vizsgálatot indít a halálozások és az ötévesnél fiatalabb gyermekek körében július vége óta szokatlanul nagy arányban jelentkező vesekárosodások miatt.
A gambiai hatóságok kedden közölték, hogy az első vizsgálati eredmények szerint 69 gyerek halálát okozta a szirup.
Indiát sokszor nevezik „a világ gyógyszertárának”, és az ország gyógyszergyártásának történetében ez az egyik legsúlyosabb botrány.
Jóllehet az indiai hatóságok szerint a köptetőszirupot csak gambiai exportra hagyták jóvá, az Egészségügyi Világszervezet (WHO) nem zárta ki, hogy hogy illegálisan máshova is jutott belőle.
