A Gilgit-Baltisztán tartomány északi részén fekvő Szkardu közelében több hegyi falu lakóit költöztették biztonságosabb vidékekre, miután az árvíz lerombolta a házukat és a vetést – közölte Harún Gul, a helyi mentőszolgálatok képviselője.
A tartomány a Himalája és a Karakorum-hegység között fekszik, több mint 3000 gleccsertó található a térségben, az ENSZ Fejlesztési Alapja (UNDP) szerint több, mint bárhol a világban.
Harún Gul elmondta, hogy a mentés a hét végén kezdődött, és hétfőig tartott.
Pakisztánnak, az éghajlatváltozással szemben az egyik legérzékenyebb országnak a nagy részén heves hőhullámok voltak, egyes területeken a hőmérséklet elérte az 50 Celsius-fokot is.
Az elhúzódó hőség, illetve a jövő hetekre vonatkozó előrejelzésekben szereplő heves esőzések további gleccsertóáradásokat okozhatnak a hegységekben – figyelmeztetett a nemzeti katasztrófaelhárítási hivatal.

Negyvenre emelkedett az India északkeleti részén fekvő Lhonak-tó völgyében csütörtökön bekövetkezett árvízkatasztrófa halálos áldozatainak száma, több tucat eltűnt embert továbbra is keresnek – közölték pénteken kormányzati tisztviselők.
Szerdán egy felhőszakadás rövid idő alatt hatalmas mennyiségű esőt zúdított a gleccsertóra, amely villámárvizeket váltott ki a völgyben, mintegy 150 kilométerre északra Gangtoktól, Szikkim állam székhelyétől, a kínai határ közelében.
Míg az elsődleges jelentések szerint a katasztrófában legkevesebb 14 ember vesztette életét, a szikkimi hatóságok csütörtök estére 18 áldozatról számoltak be, a szomszédos Bengál állam mentőcsapatai pedig további 22, a víz által elsodort holttestet találtak. További 75 ember eltűnt.
Az indiai hadsereg közölte, hogy csaknem 1500 bajba jutott turista evakuálását tervezi helikopterrel, amint a térségben javul az időjárás.
A katasztrófa, amely a hatóságok szerint 22 ezer ember életét érintette, a legújabb a dél-ázsiai hegyvidéken bekövetkezett, halálos áldozatokat követelő időjárási események sorában, amelyeket az éghajlatváltozással indokolnak.
India más hegyvidéki területeit, valamint a szomszédos Pakisztán és Nepál egyes részeit az elmúlt hónapokban özönvízszerű esőzések, áradások és földcsuszamlások sújtották, amelyek több ember halálát okozták.
