Sivadó János parókus a Vasárnap.hu-nak telefonon nyilatkozva megerősítette a támadás tényét. Mint mondta, a templomban hétfő este pár perccel nyolc óra után keletkezett tűz, a vandál cselekedetnek szemtanúja is van. Az elkövető elmenekült a helyszínről, a kár több millió forint. A lelkipásztor hangsúlyozta; mindez keresztényellenes cselekedet volt.
A megtámadott ikonosztázt tavaly ősszel szentelték a Hajdúdorogi Főegyházmegye tudósítása szerint. Az egyház saját nyilvántartása alapján a városban mintegy 300 görögkatolikus él, akiknek 20 éve van saját lelkészségük.
