A gyilkosság nem sokkal reggel 7 óra előtt történt még november 21-én. A fiú először azt mondta a rendőröknek, hogy a fegyvert az édesanyja hálószobájából vette el, és az alagsorba ment, ahol a nő éppen mosott – ekkor sült el véletlenül a fegyver.
A rendőrök hittek neki, ezért a történtek ellenére a családjával maradhatott.
A fiú később viszont a családnak bevallotta, hogy szándékosan fogta rá anyjára a fegyvert és nála volt a fegyverdoboz kulcsa is. Az anyja halála után be is lépett annak az Amazon-fiókjába és vásárolt magának egy VR headset-et.
A rendőrségnek ezután elmondta azt is, hogy aznap az anyja a szokásosnál korábban ébresztette és nem engedte neki, hogy megvegye a kinézett headset-et magának.
A fiú már korábban is furcsán viselkedett – a rokonoknak egyszer például azt mondta, hogy képzeletbeli emberek beszélnek hozzá.

Lisa Montgomeryn azt követően hajtották végre az ítéletet, hogy az ország legfelsőbb bírósága hatályon kívül helyezte Indiana állam bíróságának a kivégzés elhalasztásáról szóló döntését, amelyet a testület kedden hozott.
A kivégzést méreginjekcióval hajtották vére.
Az 52 éves Montgomeryt 2007-ben ítélték halálra Missouriban azt követően, hogy a bíróság bűnösnek találta abban, hogy három évvel korábban elrabolt és megfojtott egy nyolc hónapos terhes asszonyt, és kivágta a hasából az élő magzatot.
