Két gyermek meghalt, nyolc másik pedig személy megsérült egy texasi gyorsulási versenyen, amikor egy sofőr elvesztette uralmát járműve felett, és a nézők közé csapódott.
Egy 6 és egy 8 éves fiú meghalt az Airport Race Wars 2 elnevezésű népszerű rendezvényen, amely ezreket vonzott a kerrville-i repülőtérre – közölte a rendőrség szombat este.
Szombat délután 15 óra 20 perc körül egy sofőr a kifutópályán száguldott, amikor elvesztette az irányítást, „parkoló járműveknek ütközött, és a versenyeket figyelő nézők közé csapódott“ – közölte a rendőrség.
Négy, 26 és 46 év közötti áldozatot a közeli kórházakba szállítottak a San Antoniótól mintegy 100 kilométerre északnyugatra fekvő helyszínről. Az egyik sérültet, egy 46 éves nőt a University Medical Centerbe szállították, és továbbra is kritikus állapotban van. Két másik gyermeket, egy 4 éves fiút és egy három hónapos kislányt, elővigyázatosságból a Peterson Regionális Orvosi Központba helyeztek – írja a New York Post.
A 34 éves sofőrt a San Antonio Medical Centerbe szállították, állapota stabil. Két másik személyt a helyszínen elláttak és elengedtek.
A meghalt gyermekek személyazonosságát még nem hozták nyilvánosságra. A rendőrség közölte, hogy a nyomozás folyamatban van.
Louis Amestoy szabadúszó újságíró, aki ott volt az eseményen, az Associated Pressnek elmondta, hogy körülbelül 3500 motorsportrajongó vett részt az eseményen, amely „egy akciódús, családbarát, mindenre kiterjedő, No Prep Drag Racing nap“.
Amestoy elmondta, hogy a nyolc kilométer hosszú pálya vízzel töltött gátakkal volt ellátva, amelyek azonban nem nyúltak túl a célvonalon. A nézők akár 5 méterre is megközelíthették a versenypályát.
