Mivel nővére értesítette a kórházat, hogy a 36 éves férfi regisztrált szervdonor, a diagnózis után áttolták egy másik műtőbe, hogy eltávolítsák a szívét, ám eközben kinyitotta a szemét, írja a People.
Erről nővére utólag azt mondta, olyan volt, mintha bátyja ezzel akarta volna tudatni a körülötte lévőkkel, hogy még nem halt meg. A kórházi személyzet ugyanakkor azt mondta, hogy mindez csupán megszokott reflex, így a csodával határos, hogy Hoover mégis megúszta élve a súlyos orvosi műhibának tűnő esetet.
Natasha Miller a műtőben volt, amikor Hoovert előkészítették a szervkivételi beavatkozásra, és mint a történteket felidézve elmondta, az ő feladata volt a kiemelt szervek megfelelő kezelése a beültetés előtt. Hozzátette, hogy amikor meglátta az ágyon fekvő férfit, rögtön tudta, hogy valami nincs rendben. Olyan volt, mintha a testének rángatásával próbált volna jelezni, később látták, hogy potyognak a könnyei is. Ezután az orvosok elaltatták, ám végül a transzplantációs csapat több tagja közölte, hogy nem hajlandóak folytatni a beavatkozást.
Végül le is állították a szervek kiemelésére szolgáló műtétet, ám Anthony Thomas Hoover II-t azzal engedték haza a kórházból, hogy nővérének azt mondták, nem fog a 36 éves férfi nem fog sokáig élni. Az ügy kipattanása óta három év telt el, Hoover még mindig él, bár beszélni és mozogni nehezen tud, a kórház dolgozói közül pedig többen felmondtak a történtek miatt.
