A Sea Sheperd France környezetvédelmi szervezet szúrta ki az Atlanti-óceán felszínén lebegő döglött halak tömegét, amely mintegy háromezer négyzetméteren terül el a francia partok közelében – írja a BBC.
Az aktivisták le is filmezték a látványt, ezzel akarták felhívni a közvélemény figyelmét arra, hogy az ipari léptékű halászat mekkora károkat okoz. Egy iparági közlemény szerint a százezer kék puhatőkehalat a világ második legnagyobb halászhajója, a holland tulajdonban lévő, de litván zászló alatt hajózó Margiris hagyta el, miután kiszakadt a hálója.
A francia halászati miniszter, Annick Girardin is reagált az esetre: sokkolónak nevezte a felvételeket, és azt mondta, hogy vizsgálatot indít az ügyben. Az EU környezetért, óceánokért és halászatért felelős biztosa, Virginijus Sinkevicius, is megszólalt, mint mondta, alaposan informálódik és bizonyítékokat gyűjt az üggyel kapcsolatban. A Margiris tulajdonosait képviselő iparági szervezet azt írta, hogy mostani hálószakadás egy nagyon ritka baleset, és az uniós jogszabályokkal összhangban a kiömlött halmennyiséget levonták a jármű kvótájából, az ügyet pedig jelentették a litván hatóságoknak. A több mint egy kilométer hosszú hálót használó, a halakat pedig a fedélzeti üzemben feldolgozó Margiris nem először keveredett botrányba: 2012-ben Ausztráliában tiltakoztak ellene, és annak ellenére is el kellett hagynia az ausztrál vizeket, hogy hivatalosan 18 ezer tonna hal kifogására volt kvótája.
