Egy nap alatt csaknem egy évi csapadékkal, villámáradásokat okozva vonult át az Egyesült Államok délnyugati területei felett a Hilary trópusi vihar hétfőn, de az ítéletidő emberáldozatot nem szedett.
A Csendes-óceán felett a múlt héten még hurrikán kategóriájú viharzóna fokozatosan veszített erejéből, és trópusi, majd trópusi jellegű viharként érte el Mexikó felől Kalifornia államot vasárnap, ahol San Diego és Los Angeles környékén okozott károkat, háztartások százezreinél átmeneti áramszünetet.
A Los Angelestől keletre fekvő Cathedral Cityben több mint 10 embert kellett kimenekíteni egy idősotthonból sárlavina miatt, a közeli Palm Springst a lezúduló víz egy időre megközelíthetetlenné tette, az oda vezető utakat lezárták, miután a sár mellett nagyméretű sziklatömbök torlaszolták el.
A város feletti San Jacinto-hegységben hullott a legtöbb, 300 millimétert meghaladó csapadék. A legkomolyabb szelet 140 kilométer per órás lökésekkel a San Diego közeli hegyekben mérték. A Hilary trópusi viharban több időjárási rekord is megdőlt, Los Angelesben és San Diegóban minden idők legcsapadékosabb nyári napja volt a vasárnap, San Diegóban a szokásos nyári csapadék tízszerese hullott le egy nap alatt.
A Kalifornia keleti részén fekvő Death Valley sivatagban a feljegyzések 1877-es kezdete óta a második legcsapadékosabb nap volt több mint 40 milliméter esővel, ami a teljes éves csapadék háromnegyede.
Nevada államban szintén rendkívüli csapadékot hozott az óceán felől érkező viharzóna,
a Las Vegas közelében fekvő Lee Canyonban hullott 220 milliméter eső csaknem kétszerese az 1907-ben feljegyzett korábbi napi rekordnak. Szinte egy időben a viharral Los Angelestől nem messze erőteljes földrengés is volt Ventura közelében. Az 5,1-es erősségű földmozgás komolyabb károkat ugyanakkor nem okozott.
A csapadékzóna hétfőn Oregon, Idaho és Montana államok fölött volt, ahova viharos széllel és esővel érkezett, de károkat már nem okozott. Hétfőn Texas állam déli, a Mexikói-öböl közelében fekvő területeire adtak ki trópusi viharra figyelmeztetést.
