Legkevesebb kilenc ember meghalt Délkelet-Indiában szombaton egy hindu templomnál kialakult tömegpánik során. A kétezer fő befogadására alkalmas, Andhra Prades államban, Srikakulam közelében található templomnál 25 ezer hívő zsúfolódott össze a hindu vallás egyik szent napja, az ekadasi alkalmából.
Helyi beszámolók szerint a pánik akkor tört ki, amikor a tömeget terelő egyik vasrács eltört. Az áldozatok között nyolc nő és egy gyerek van. A sérültek száma legalább 18.
„A hívők halála ebben a tragikus incidensben rendkívül szívszorító. Mély részvétemet fejezem ki az elhunytak családjainak” – írta Andhra Prades állam miniszterelnöke, Csandrababu Naidu, aki egyúttal arra utasította a helyi tisztviselőket, hogy gondoskodjanak a sérültek gyors ellátásáról.
Annak ellenére, hogy a templom magánkézben van, az indiai kormány 200 ezer rúpiát, azaz nagyjából 81 000 hrivnyát fizet ki a halottak hozzátartozóinak. A sérültek 50 ezer rúpiát kapnak.
Indiában időről időre előfordulnak hasonló tömegszerencsétleségek, nem ritkán vallási ünnepek alkalmával. Idén júliusban egy észak-indiai, népszerű hindu templomnál hat embert tapostak halálra, több tucatnyian pedig megsérültek.
