Sors Róbert, a település vezetője a Szabadkai Magyar Rádiónak azt mondta, a rendőrség biztosította a terepet, Horgoson nincs veszély, ám mindenkit arra kért, hogy ne menjen a közeli Szelevényi erdő felé, amelynek közelében a lövöldözés történt.
A várakozások szerint a rendőrség a nap folyamán átvizsgálja és biztosítja a terepet.
Az utóbbi néhány hónapban több leszámolás is történt a szerb–magyar határ közelében migránscsoportok és embercsempészbandák között.
A migrációs válság tetőpontján, 2015-ben körülbelül egymillió illegális bevándorló haladt át az úgynevezett nyugat-balkáni útvonalon, amelynek Szerbia is része. Hivatalos adatok szerint az illegális bevándorlás legnépszerűbb útvonala még mindig a nyugat-balkáni szárazföldi út.
Mivel a szerb hatóságok nem toloncolják ki azokat, akiket elfognak, csupán az ország északi határától a déli határig szállítják őket vissza, a migránsok sok esetben újra útra kelnek, és néhány nappal később elérik a magyar határt, ahol ismét megkísérelnek bejutni az Európai Unióba.
