A chilei kulturális örökségvédelmi hivatal illetékese, Carolina Perez Dattari elmondta: egyelőre nem tudni, hány kőszobrot érintett a tűz, amely hétfőn lobbant fel, és csaknem 60 hektárnyi területen pusztított.
A tüzet állítólag szándékosan gyújtották az UNESCO világörökségi listáján szereplő Rano Raraku vulkán környékén. A kőszobroknak otthont adó nemzeti park vezetője szerint a lángok helyrehozhatatlan károkat okoztak.
A Húsvét-szigeten csaknem ezer, a helyiek által moainak nevezett megalit található. A nagy fejjel rendelkező kőszobrok átlagosan körülbelül négy méter magasak, és egy polinéz törzs faragta őket több mint ötszáz évvel ezelőtt.
A legnagyobb szobor tíz méter magas és 74 tonna. A figurákat kör alakban helyezték el a szigeten, tekintetük a szárazföld felé irányul, írja az MTI.
A Húsvét-sziget Chile partjaitól 3500 kilométerre fekszik. Fő bevételi forrása a turizmus. A szigeten mindössze három hónapja oldották fel a koronavírus-világjárvány miatti lezárásokat.
