Délnyugat-Floridában a Lee megyei rendőrhatóság (Lee County Sheriff’s Office) helyi idő szerint szombat délutáni közlése szerint a körzetben 35 elhunytat találtak meg a kutató- és mentőegységek. Lee megyében fekszik Fort Myers kikötőváros, ahol a legkomolyabb pusztítást okozta a 4-es erősségű hurrikán szerdán éjszaka. Az Ian hurrikán csütörtökön érte el Florida partjait, elképesztő pusztítást okozva a városokban. Fort Myersben készült egy videó, ahol egy cápát láttak úszkálni az utcákon kialakult „kis öblökben”.
A 4-es kategóriájú vihar hatalmas erősségű széllel sújtotta a városokat, víz öntötte el a házakat, törmelékek szálltak a levegőben. Egy helyinek egy bizarr jelenetet sikerült megörökítenie: a vízzel elöntött utcákon egy cápa úszkált.
Valahogy Fort Myers környékén kötött ki egy cápa az Ian hurrikán miatt – írta Brad Habuda, aki először osztotta meg a felvételt a Twitteren.
Egyes területeken a víz közel két méterig emelkedett – írja a Daily Star. A lakók arról számoltak be, hogy kamerákat állítottak fel a házuk előtt, hogy figyeljék a vihart, ám ezek a kamerák is a víz alá kerültek.

Az amerikai állam 13 megyéjében kötelező kitelepítést rendeltek el, több százezer otthonban már nincs áram.

Az év első komoly hurrikánja, az Ian névre keresztelt trópusi vihar nyugat felől érheti el a félsziget délnyugati részét, elsősorban Fort Myers és Tampa között. Az amerikai hurrikánközpont (National Hurricane Center – NHC) közép-európai idő szerint este 6 órakor kiadott jelentése szerint a vihar középpontja 80 kilométerre volt a partvidéktől, Fort Myers városától. A NHC előrejelzése szerint mintegy 6 méter magas hullámokra lehet számítani, amikor a hurrikán középpontja eléri a szárazföldet. A hivatal figyelmeztetése szerint „túlélhetetlen” méretű hullámok is közelednek.
A Florida katasztrófavédelmi hatóságának honlapján olvasható információk szerint 13 megyében rendeltek el bizonyos területeken és bizonyos épülettípusokra kötelező kitelepítést, valamint tucatnyi megyében ajánlották ezt nyomatékosan az ott élőknek. Ron De Santis kormányzó délelőtti sajtótájékoztatóján közölte, hogy aki a felszólítás ellenére nem hagyta el lakóhelyét, annak már késő megtenni, őket arra szólította fel, hogy keressenek menedéket, ne tartózkodjanak a szabadban.

A kormányzó az előkészületekről szóló sajtótájékoztatón elmondta, hogy a Nemzeti Gárda 7 ezer tagja áll készenlétben, és köszönetet mondott a szövetségi kormánynak, valamint annak a 27 államnak, amely segítséget küldött vagy ajánlott a vihar elleni védekezésben, illetve a vihar következményeinek felszámolásában és a helyreállításban a hurrikán elvonulása után.
Ron De Santis úgy fogalmazott, hogy erre a viharra mindig emlékeznek majd az emberek, sokak életének legnagyobb hurrikánja közeleg.
Az Ian besorolása az 5 fokozatú hurrikánskálán 4-es, nagyon közel az 5-ös fokozathoz. A fokozatokat a maximális széllökések sebessége alapján állapítják meg. A vihar jelenleg 155 mérföldes maximális széllökésekkel tombol, az 5-ös fokozat 157 mérföldes sebességnél kezdődik.
A hírtelevíziók helyszíni beszámolója szerint szerdán délután már több mint 624 ezer otthonban szűnt meg az áramszolgáltatás, a transzformátorállomások egymás után mondják fel a szolgálatot.
Ron De Santis azt is elmondta tájékoztatóján, hogy már 42 ezer elektromossági szakember áll készenlétben, hogy a vihar elvonulta után helyreállítsák az ellátást. A kormányzó közlése szerint a 2004-es Charlie hurrikán meg sem közelítette a mostani hurrikán erejét.
Az állam egészségügyi tisztségviselői arról számoltak be, hogy 15 kórházat kiürítettek, mintegy 40 idősközpontból, és több tucat börtönből is evakuálták az ott lakókat. A működő intézmények jó része áramfejlesztőről üzemel.

11 millió ember maradt áram nélkül Kubában, miután az Ian névre keresztelt hurrikán lecsapott a szigetország nyugati felére – írja a BBC.
Az ország energiaellátása azután omlott össze, hogy a vihart követően nem tudták visszakapcsolni a hálózatra a fővárostól, Havannától mintegy 100 km-re található Antonio Guiteras erőművet, ami az ország legnagyobb áramtermelője. A hurrikán először csak mintegy 1 millió fogyasztót vágott el az áramszolgáltatástól az ország nyugati térségében, ám később a teljes elektromos hálózat összeomlott. Több tízezer embert kellett evakuálni a térségből, a hurrikán áradásokat okozott és épületek rongálódtak meg. Eddig két ember halálát erősítették meg a hatóságok.
A vihar végigsöpört Pinar del Rio tartományon is, ahol a legendás kubai szivarok alapanyagául szolgáló dohánylevelek nagy részét termesztik. Az egyik legnagyobb dohányültetvény, a La Robaina is súlyos károkat szenvedett.
Az Ian hurrikán most Florida partjai felé tart, az államban már most hatalmas a készültség, arra számítanak ugyanis, hogy a vihar erősödni fog, mire eléri az Egyesült Államok déli határát. A lakosok homokzsákokat töltenek, gátakat építenek a házaik köré, bedeszkázzák az ablakaikat, és több napra elegendő étellel és itallal próbálnak készülni a viharra.
A több mint hárommillió embernek otthont adó floridai Tampa-öböl az Egyesült Államok egyik legveszélyeztetettebb régiója. A területet 1921 óta először sújthatja közvetlenül hurrikán. A régió alacsony tengerszint feletti magassága, az emelkedő tengerszint és a népesség sűrűsége növeli a katasztrófa kockázatát. Amennyiben a hurrikán teljes erővel csap le a területre, pár napon belül felismerhetetlenné válhat – figyelmeztetnek a szakemberek.
Az ötfokozatú skálán egyelőre hármas besorolású hurrikán akár 195 km/órás széllel csaphat le Floridára a hét közepén. A tengerparti városokban közel 2,5 millió lakos evakuálását kezdték meg, a rendőrség házról házra jár, és kéri az embereket, hogy hagyják el az otthonukat, és menjenek biztonságosabb helyre, sokan azonban nem hajlandóak erre. Jane Castor, Tampa Bay polgármestere kedden azt mondta, hogy a városban kijárási tilalmat is bevezetnek. Az iskolákban és egyetemeken a hétre oktatási szünetet rendeltek el.
Az Ian hurrikán miatt a NASA Artemis–1 holdrakétáját is visszatolták a szerelőcsarnokba, miután vasárnap bejelentették, hogy a keddre tervezett indítást határozatlan időre elhalasztják a várható vihar miatt.
