A New York-i rendőrség tájékoztatása szerint nyolc ember halt meg a városban, amikor a víz csapdába ejtette őket a pincékben. A New Jersey városában található Elizabeth lakótelepen négy holttestet találtak – erről a város polgármestere számolt be.
A városi tisztségviselők csütörtökön a Twitteren “történelmi áradásokról” írtak, miközben a folyók szintje tovább emelkedik.

A New York államot kormányzó Kathy Hochul a Twitteren azt írta: a döntésnek köszönhetően elérhetővé válik a szövetségi segély a rászorulók számára.
New York polgármestere, Bill de Blasio a közösségi médiában figyelmeztette a veszélyes helyzetre a lakosságot.
A polgármester helyi idő szerint hajnali ötig megtiltotta a szárazföldi közlekedést a nagyvárosban, miután számos autóst ki kellett menteni az elárasztott utakról.
Tornádó pusztított New Jersey-ben
A szomszédos New Jersey államot vezető Phil Murphy is rendkívüli állapotot hirdetett szerda éjszaka, miután az államban tornádó pusztított.

— Todd Paron🇺🇸🇬🇷🎧👽 (@tparon) August 29, 2024Katasztrófa sújtotta állammá minősítette Biden Louisiana államot, miután lecsapott a pusztító erejű vihar, mely a Katrina hurrikán 16.

A helyi sajtó televíziós közvetítései folyamatos figyelemmel kísérik, hol jár épp a hurrikán, ami akár az elmúlt másfél évszázad legerősebb hurrikánjává is válhat.
A pusztítás első képsorait a közösségi oldalakon tették közzé a felhasználók.

A televíziós híradókban sok kilométeres közlekedési dugókat mutatnak a tengerparttól elvezető utakon.
A város infrastruktúrájának fenntartásáért felelős Ramsey Green hangsúlyozta, hogy a New Orleanst védő gátrendszeren jelentős fejlesztéseket hajtottak végre a 2005-ös Katrina hurrikán okozta árvíz óta.
Az akkori vihar a legjelentősebb károkat New Orleansban okozta, miután a várost védő gátrendszer hiányosságai miatt New Orleans területének mintegy 80 százaléka víz alá került.

Várhatóan vasárnap fog a legnagyobb erővel lecsapni.
„A szélkárok és a viharhullámok életveszélyesek lesznek Louisiana államra és a Floridai-öböl partvidékére. A lakosoknak fel kell készülniük a hosszú távú áramkimaradásokra is”– mondta Chad Myers, a CNN meteorológusa pénteken.
A Katrina hurrikánnak egyébként éppen erre a vasárnapi napra esik a 16.
A Mexikói-öböl mentén lévő melegáramlatok elősegítik a vihar gyors felerősödését. Ennek eredményeként valószínűleg intenzívebbek lesznek ezek a természeti csapások, extrém csapadékkal kísérve. – olvashatjuk a BBC hírportálon.
