A Hiber Pakhtunkva tartomány Karak nevű településén történt incidenst jogvédők és Shirín Mazari, pakisztáni emberi jogi miniszter is elítélte. A tárcavezető a Twitteren sürgette a bűnüldözési hatóságokat az elkövetők felelősségre vonására.

Szemtanúk beszámolói szerint a csőcselék a Dzsamiat Ulema-i-Iszlam párt helyi vezetőivel az élén azt követően támadta meg az 1900-as évek elején épített templomot, hogy a helyi hindu közösség engedélyt kapott az imaház felújítására a hatóságoktól. A békésnek indult tüntetés az imámok provokatív szónoklatai nyomán csapott át erőszakba.
A történteket megelőzően néhány héttel a kormány a vallási vezetők tanácsa jóváhagyásával engedélyezte egy új hindu templom megépítését Iszlámábádban. A muszlim többség és a hindu kisebbség általánosságban békésen él egymás mellett Pakisztánban, az utóbbi években azonban előfordultak hasonló erőszakos incidensek.
A pakisztáni hindu kisebbség nagy része Indiába vándorolt ki, miután az egykori brit gyarmatot felosztották 1947-ben.
