Az egyik helyi lakos, aki meglátta a hirdetést, képernyőfelvételt csinált róla és elküldte a rendőrségnek.

Nourah bint Szaid al-Qahtanit a múlt héten ítélték el, miután több vádpontban is bűnösnek találták – ilyen volt többek között az, hogy „az internetet arra használta, hogy megbontsa a (szaúdi) társadalom szövetét” és „a közösségi média használatával megsértette a közösségi rendet” – közölte bírósági dokumentumokra hivatkozva a washingtoni székhelyű DAWN jogvédő szervezet – számolt be róla a Reuters.
Arról, hogy konkrétan mik szerepeltek a kérdéses posztokban, vagy hogy kicsoda Qahtani, keveset tudni – az viszont bizonyos, hogy ügyében alig pár héttel azután hoztak ítéletet, hogy 34 év börtönre ítéltek egy szaúdi nőt, mert a Twittert használta.
A 34 éves Szalma as-Sihab az ítélet szerint Twitter-fiókjuk követésével segített azoknak, akik destabilizálják a polgári és a nemzetbiztonságot. A szaúdi nő kétgyermekes édesanya, a Leeds-i Egyetem doktori hallgatója, aki szabadságra tért haza a királyságba. 2020-ban utazott Szaúd-Arábiába, azóta nem térhetett vissza családjához az Egyesült Királyságba.
Eredetileg három év börtönre ítélték, a fellebbviteli bíróság azonban ezt 34 év börtönre változtatta. Sihab nem nevezhető komoly követőtáborral rendelkező, meghatározó aktivistának, a Twitteren 2597, míg az Instagramon 159 követője volt.
Abdullah al-Aoudh, a DAWN közel-keleti kutatási igazgatója szerint a szaúdi hatóságok mindkét ügyben „visszaéltek” a törvényekkel, hogy megbüntessék azokat a szaúdi polgárokat, akik kritizálják a rendszert.
„De ez a történetnek csupán az egyik fele, miután még maga a koronaherceg sem engedne meg egy ilyen bosszúszomjas és eltúlzott ítéletet, ha nem érezné úgy, hogy ezeket a lépéseket az Egyesült Államok és a nyugati hatalmak ne értelmeznék cenzúraként.” A szaúdi kormánymédia nem válaszolt az üggyel kapcsolatos megkeresésekre.
Biden látogatása felbátoríthatta a szaúdiakat
Joe Biden amerikai elnök júliusban találkozott Mohammed bin Salman koronaherceggel az országban, a kettejük közötti párbeszéd során pedig az emberi jogi aggodalmak is terítékre kerültek, melyek megkeserítik a két ország közti kapcsolatot. Bár a herceg sokat tett azért, hogy reformokat vezessen be – ide tartozik például, hogy már nők is vezethetnek autót, vagy hogy sok állást direkt azért hoztak létre, hogy nők is dolgozhassanak – a két nő ügye aláássa a koronaherceg által az országról láttatni akart képet.
Emberi jogi aktivisták korábban arra figyelmeztettek, hogy az utazás felbátoríthatja a királyságot a másként gondolkodók és demokráciapárti aktivisták elleni lépések fokozására.
A szaúdi börtönökben lévő politikai foglyok rokonai azt remélték, hogy az amerikai elnök látogatása lökést adhat a foglyok szabadon engedésének. A szaúdi hivatalnokok szerint azonban a királyságban nincsenek politikai foglyok. „Csak olyan foglyaink vannak, akik bűnt követtek el és akiket a bíróság elítélt, mert bűnösnek találta őket. Az, hogy valakit politikai fogolynak tituláljanak, egyszerűen nevetséges” – mondta az ország külügyminisztere a múlt hónapban.
Az ügy másik vetülete, hogy Mohammed bin Szalmán koronaherceg országa Twitter-felhasználóit célozta meg, miközben a szaúdi állam befektetési alapján, a Public Investment Fundon keresztül jelentős részesedést birtokol az amerikai közösségimédia-cégben.
