A forgószél lakóépületeket és autókat semmisített meg, fákat csavart ki az állam székhelyétől, Des Moines-tól 90 kilométerre délnyugatra fekvő, mintegy 2000 lakosú kisvárosban, amelynek nagy részét elpusztította. Mivel az iowai hatóságok jelentése szerint még zajlik a lakosok összeszámlálása, a halálos áldozatok pontos számát egyelőre nem közölték.

A nap folyamán az állam több részén is kialakultak tornádók, egyikük ledöntött egy 76 méter magas szélerőművet Iowa délnyugati részén, illetve több szélturbina is kigyulladt és megrongálódott. A keddi forgószelek erejét jelzi, hogy ezeket a szélerőműveket úgy építették, hogy ellenálljanak a tornádóknak, hurrikánoknak és más erős szeleknek.
Tornádók kialakulásáról és pusztításáról, jégesők, heves esőzések és porviharok okozta károkról érkeztek jelentések kedden Iowa mellett Nebraska, Illinois és Colorado államból is. Szerdán forgószél és viharok miatt adtak ki riasztást Wisconsin állam egyes részeire, illetve az állam székhelyére, Madisonra. A keddihez hasonló erejű heves viharok és esőzések várhatók az előrejelzések szerint Minnesota, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas és Missouri államban is.

Legalább egy ember meghalt és többen megsérültek egy középiskolai lövöldözésben csütörtök reggel az iowai Perry városában – közölte az ABC News az illetékes hatóságok információi alapján.
A rendőrség szerint a támadó még a tanítás kezdete előtt, a téli szünet utáni első napon, helyi idő szerint reggel 7 óra 37 perckor nyitott tüzet. Hozzátették, hogy az épületben kevesen voltak, így az elkövető sokkal több embert is megsebesíthetett volna.

Tornádó sújtott le szombaton az amerikai Iowa állam Winterset nevű településére, legalább hatan meghaltak – közölte a Des Moines Register című iowai lap a helyi hatóságokra hivatkozva.
A tagállami székhelytől, Des Moines-től délnyugatra található Winterset településére a késő délutáni órákban csapott le a 332 kilométer per órás széllökésekkel kísért tornádó.
A Des Moines Register honlapján megjelent információk szerint két gyerek és négy felnőtt halt meg, a településen pedig komoly károk keletkeztek.
