A gyanú szerint számos terrorista tevékenységet folytattak.
Az 1998-as nagypénteki egyezménnyel elindult megbékélési folyamat meghatározó horderejű mozzanataként az IRA – amely valaha a legnagyobb britellenes katolikus félkatonai szervezet volt Észak-Írországban – már hosszú évekkel ezelőtt felhagyott a fegyveres akciókkal, leszerelte fegyverzetét, és gyakorlatilag beszüntette tevékenységét.
Az IRA működésének beszüntetését és a felekezeti kiegyezést egyes kisebb katolikus szakadár szervezetek – amelyek közül többen valamilyen kiegészítő jelzővel IRA-nak nevezik magukat – azonban még most sem fogadják el, és további harcot hirdettek a brit fennhatóság ellen.
Ilyen szervezet a 2012-ben alakult Új IRA is.
