A városból fosztogatásokról, útlezárásokról és furkósbotokat lengető tüntetőkről érkeztek beszámolók.
A korábbi megmozdulások KwaZulu-Natal tartományra összpontosultak, Zuma szűkebb hazájára, ahol a politikus csütörtökön kezdte meg tizenöt hónapos börtönbüntetésének letöltését. Ezt azért szabták ki rá, mert bírósági idézés ellenére sem volt hajlandó megjelenni a korrupciós ügyeit vizsgáló bizottság meghallgatásán.
A tartományban legalább 25 teherautót gyújtottak fel a Zuma szabadlábra helyezését követelő elégedetlenkedők.
A NatJOINTS dél-afrikai hírszerzési ügynökség közölte, hogy eddig 62 embert vettek őrizetbe az erőszakos tiltakozó akciókkal kapcsolatban KwaZulu-Natal és Gauteng tartományokban. Utóbbiban található Johannesburg is. A rendőrség szerint bűnözők akarnak hasznot húzni a tiltakozási hullámból tolvajlással és károkozással.
Cyril Ramaphosa hivatalban lévő elnök nyugalomra intette a tüntetőket, egyben pedig leszögezte, hogy követeléseik nem igazolják az erőszakot és a vandalizmust.
Zuma 2018 februárjában pártja, az Afrikai Nemzeti Kongresszus (ANC) nyomására lemondott, hogy megelőzze leváltását. A korrupciós botrányokba keveredett politikus tagadja az ellene felhozott vádakat, de nem hajlandó együttműködni az elnökségének utolsó hetében felállított vizsgálóbizottsággal.
Utódja, Cyril Ramaphosa igyekezett visszaállítani az ANC jó hírnevét, egyúttal a befektetők Dél-Afrikába vetett bizalmát, és határozottabb fellépést ígért a korrupció ellen, ám saját pártján belül konfliktusba került az ANC Zumát támogató frakciójával.
A 79 éves Zuma fellebbezést nyújtott be az alkotmánybíróságon a letöltendő szabadságvesztést kiszabó ítélet ellen, részben törékeny egészségére és a koronavírus-fertőzés veszélyére hivatkozva. A meghallgatás az ügyben hétfőn lesz.
